Union Bank of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to Nigerian teachers and the wider education sector at the flag off of the 12th edition of the Maltina Teacher of the Year Competition (MTOTY), held today in Lagos.
Now in its third consecutive year as a partner, the Bank joined organisers Nigerian Breweries Plc and the Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund, alongside educators and sector stakeholders, for a panel session on how educational support can enhance learning outcomes for teachers and students.
Speaking on behalf of Union Bank, Chief Brand and Marketing Officer, Olufunmilola Aluko, positioned education as central to the Bank’s purpose rather than a peripheral cause.
“At Union Bank, we believe education is not a social obligation. It is a strategic investment,” she said. “A nation that does not invest in its teachers and its learners is borrowing from its own future, and we are in the business of building futures, not mortgaging them.”
She pointed to Edu360, the Bank’s flagship education initiative under the UnionCares platform, as the practical expression of that conviction. Edu360 spans the full education value chain, from widening access for children in underserved communities and investing in the teachers who multiply learning outcomes, to building digital literacy and STEM capability, and preparing young people for employment or enterprise.
On the role of the financial sector, Aluko challenged her peers to think differently. “Financial institutions need to stop thinking of ourselves as donors and start thinking of ourselves as ecosystem builders,” she said. “We can embed financial literacy into school curricula, design products that help parents save for their children’s education, and convene policymakers, educators and the private sector around shared goals. Above all, we can show up consistently, not only when it suits our brand calendars.”
She noted that lasting change requires sustained collaboration between the public and private sectors, and pointed to the strength of the signal sent when institutions commit to teachers at scale, citing the competition’s ₦100 million grand prize. With twelve editions and more than three hundred teachers recognised to date, she described MTOTY as a model of the consistency Union Bank embodies through Edu360.
Her closing message was directed at educators across the country. “To every teacher in this country, what you do is not small,” she said. “Your story deserves to be told, and Nigeria needs to know your name.”
Union Bank’s participation aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 on inclusive and equitable quality education, and reflects the Bank’s broader commitment to social impact and sustainable development across the communities it s

As the deadline of May 20, 2026, fast approaches, Wema Bank has announced the last call for submissions for children and teens interested in participating in becoming MD/CEO of Wema Bank for one day.

Launched in May 2025 as part of Wema Bank’s 80th anniversary celebration, the One-Day MD/CEO initiative was introduced by Wema Bank to commemorate Children’s Day in a uniquely unprecedented manner. Inspired by the Bank’s 80th anniversary theme “80 Years of Impact, A Future of Possibilities”, the Wema Bank One-Day MD/CEO initiative served as a bridge between past and future, giving children across Nigeria the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to become the MD/CEO of Wema Bank for one day—Children’s Day.

As 12-year-old Chiderije Mbah emerged winner, the Wema Bank One-Day MD/CEO initiative dominated the conversation on May 27, 2025, with children across Nigeria inspired to put in the work towards a successful future and parents commending the Bank’s consistent commitment to empowering children and helping them build the right future. This year, 2026, the Wema Bank One-Day MD/CEO initiative has returned on a larger scale.

For the 2026 Children’s Day celebration, Wema Bank will give another child or teenager [ages 0-16] a chance to step into the shoes of Managing Director/CEO of Wema Bank, for a day. The child will get to oversee board meetings, make tactical decisions, and experience firsthand the demands and responsibilities that come with the office of MD/CEO, especially for an institution like Wema Bank, Nigeria’s oldest indigenous national bank, most innovative and pioneer of Africa’s first fully digital bank, ALAT.

To participate, children/teens are expected to record a 60-second video detailing what their ideal role in banking would be and what they hope to achieve. This video is to be posted on any social media platform using #EvolutionOfPossibilities and tagging @wemabank on the post. The post with the highest number of likes emerges winner and the winner gets to become MD/CEO of Wema Bank on Monday, May 25, 2026, in celebration of Children’s Day.

Both parents and teens are encouraged to hurry and make their submissions now as entry closes in less than two days, specifically on Wednesday, May 20, 2026.

Nestlé Nigeria Concludes 15-Year Anniversary Celebration of its Technical Training Centre with 20 New Graduates from Abaji Factory
Nestlé Nigeria has rounded off the 15-year anniversary celebration of its Technical Training Initiative with the graduation of 20 new trainees from the Abaji Factory Technical Training Centre. This follows the recent celebration held at its Flowergate Factory in Sagamu.
The graduation reinforces the company’s long-standing commitment to equipping young Nigerians with technical and vocational skills that enhance employability, strengthen industry capability, and create meaningful pathways to work.
With an investment of over ₦6 billion, the programme, first established at Agbara Factory in 2011 and now present in Abaji and Flowergate, has equipped hundreds of young Nigerians with hands-on technical and vocational skills. Delivered through an intensive 18-month curriculum, the training combines classroom learning with practical experience in food technology, engineering, and manufacturing operations, leading to the internationally recognised City & Guilds of London Technicians’ Certification.
In line with its youth empowerment commitment, Nestlé Nigeria offered employment opportunities to the graduating trainees, continuing its practice of transitioning 98% of Technical Training Centre graduates into the company. At the ceremony, Mr. Wassim Elhusseini, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Nestlé Nigeria, encouraged the graduates to embrace the next phase of their journey with confidence.
“As you graduate today, you are stepping into an industry that depends on skill, discipline, innovation, and excellence. The skills you have gained through this programme provide a strong foundation, but your success will depend on your willingness to keep learning, adapting, and applying yourselves. Do not be discouraged by the challenges ahead. Every meaningful career is built step by step, through resilience, curiosity, and consistent performance. We are proud of what you have achieved and confident that you will make valuable contributions to Nestlé, the industry, and the country.”
Reflecting on the journey of the Nestlé Technical Training Centre, which has produced 289 graduates since inception, Shakiru Lawal, Country Human Resource Manager, Nestlé Nigeria, highlighted the programme as a strong example of Nestlé’s continued commitment to youth development, employability, and industry-led skills development. “At Nestlé, youth development is not a one-off intervention; it is a long-term commitment to building skills, expanding opportunity, and preparing young people for the future of work. The Nestlé Technical Training Centre which has grown from Agbara to Abaji and Flowergate has proven to be talent pipeline for our business and the wider manufacturing sector. Through strong partnerships with ITF, NECA, and the Swiss Embassy, we are giving trainees the exposure, confidence, and workplace readiness they need to succeed”
With 10 young men and 10 young women graduating from the programme, the ceremony also highlighted the importance of inclusion in technical education. His Excellency Mr. Patrick Egloff, Ambassador of Switzerland to Nigeria, applauded the equal representation, describing it as a strong message about opportunity and the future of technical professionals.
“One of the most inspiring aspects of today’s ceremony is the clear demonstration that technical excellence belongs equally to young women and young men. The equal representation we see among the graduates today is a powerful message about inclusion, opportunity, and the future of technical professionals.”
The presence of industry partners, community leaders, and government representatives further underscored the collaborative approach behind the programme. Mr. Adewale-Smatt Oyerinde, Director-General of the Nigerian Employers’ Consultative Association, reaffirmed NECA’s commitment to sustaining its partnership with Nestlé Nigeria in driving the continued success of the initiative. Representatives of other partners, including City & Guilds, also commended the programme and reiterated their support for strengthening technical skills development in Nigeria.
Community leaders, including representatives of the traditional leadership of Abaji led by the Chief of Staff, as well as representatives from the Ministries of Youth and Education, also delivered goodwill messages. They commended Nestlé Nigeria for its sustained investment in youth empowerment, technical education, and community development.
The Nestlé Technical Training Initiative remains a key pillar of Nestlé Needs YOUth, Nestlé’s global youth initiative launched in 2013 to equip young people with the skills, experience, and opportunities needed to access meaningful employment. Globally, the initiative aims to reach 10 million young people by 2030. In Nigeria, other programmes under this umbrella include the Nestlé Nigeria Youth Development Programme, Nesternship, and the Alliance for YOUth, all designed to help young Nigerians build skills, access opportunities, and thrive.

In an inspiring display of intelligence, courage, and creativity, 9-year-old young author ADEDOYIN PRECIOUS SHANU has captured hearts with the launch of her remarkable children’s book titled TOLA THE BULLY. The book, which focuses on the dangers of bullying among children, was officially unveiled at a colorful event held in Lagos, where pupils, teachers, parents, and guests from different schools gathered to celebrate the young writer’s achievement.

Beautiful, brilliant, and full of wisdom beyond her age, Adedoyin Precious SHANU used her book to send a powerful message to children across society — that bullying should never be tolerated in schools or among friends. Instead, children should learn to support, encourage, and love one another.

The event attracted children from various schools who came together to witness the book launch and participate in activities surrounding the publication. One of the major highlights of the occasion was the detailed book review, where speakers explained the lessons and values contained in TOLA THE BULLY. Guests praised the young author for addressing such an important social issue at a tender age.

The story in the book teaches children about the emotional pain caused by bullying and why every child deserves kindness, friendship, and respect. Through relatable characters and simple storytelling, Adedoyin encourages children to speak up against intimidation and treat others with compassion.

According to reviewers at the event, the book serves as an educational tool that can help schools, parents, and teachers guide children toward positive behavior and healthy relationships. They noted that bullying remains a serious challenge in many schools and that books like TOLA THE BULLY can help shape better attitudes among young people.

Beyond addressing bullying, the book also promotes hard work, discipline, unity, and love. It inspires children to believe in themselves, work hard toward their dreams, and become good examples in society.

Speaking during the launch, guests applauded Adedoyin Precious SHANU for her confidence and intelligence, describing her as a role model for other children. Many expressed amazement that such an impactful message could come from a 9-year-old author, proving that age is never a barrier to greatness.

Parents and educators at the event also encouraged more children to develop reading and writing habits, stressing that creative expression can help young people contribute positively to society.

The successful launch of TOLA THE BULLY marks the beginning of what many believe will be a bright future for the young author. Her courage to speak against bullying through literature has already begun inspiring children to choose kindness over cruelty and friendship over fear.

Indeed, Adedoyin Precious SHANU has shown that even at a young age, one voice and one book can make a meaningful difference in the lives of many children.
The book is available on Amazon

Government Secondary School Zing Taraba and Family Support Programme, Katsina Emerge Winners at the Savannah Conference Finals as the 26th Milo Basketball Championship Begins
The 26th edition of the Milo Basketball Championship officially began with the successful conclusion of the Savannah Conference regional finals at the Sanni Abacha Indoor Sports Hall in Kano.

The opening address was delivered by Mrs. Opeyemi Jaiyeola, Category Development Manager, on behalf of Mr. Gilbert Tweneboah, Category Manager. In his speech, he reflected on the journey of the initiative, noting that, “Since 1999, what started with fewer than 500 schools has grown into a national movement, now engaging over 12,000 schools annually. This growth is not by chance. It’s a result of dedication, consistency, and the belief that every child deserves the opportunity to discover their strength and reach their full potential.”

The girls’ final saw a competitive contest between Government Secondary School Zing, Taraba State, and Government Girls College Unity School, Bauchi.

Nigeria’s economic ambitions, whether higher productivity, a more competitive private sector, or stronger household resilience, all eventually run through the same bottleneck: the quality of the country’s human capital. For a bank, that fact carries a quiet implication. The customers, entrepreneurs, and employees of the next two decades are sitting in classrooms today, and many of those classrooms are under-resourced.
It is in that context that Union Bank of Nigeria has built its corporate social responsibility agenda around one of its major pillars – education. The thinking is not that a bank can fix Nigerian education, but that a bank has both the reach and the long-term interest to contribute meaningfully to it.
THE SCOPE OF THE WORK
Union Bank’s education work runs through Edu360, a platform that gathers the Bank’s various school, teacher, and youth interventions under one roof. Three threads run through it.
The first is teacher development, anchored by the Bank’s partnership with the Maltina Teacher of the Year (MTOTY) programme, which recognises and rewards classroom excellence. Teachers are the highest-leverage point in any education system and supporting the people who already do the work well tends to produce more durable gains than one-off interventions with students alone.
The second is practical, future-facing learning. School hackathons supported by the Bank give students the chance to work in teams, tackle real problems, and encounter technology as something they can build with rather than simply consume. For young people who may otherwise meet computing only as a subject on a timetable, that shift in posture matters.
The third is financial literacy, delivered through outreach tied to globally recognised events like World Savings Day and Financial Literacy Day. The premise is straightforward: habits formed early outlast lessons learned late. A student who understands saving, budgeting, and the basic mechanics of a bank account at fourteen, carries that understanding into adulthood, regardless of which institution they eventually bank with.
Beyond these threads, Edu360 has anchored long-running partnerships with educational institutions outside the Bank. One of the most established was with Greensprings School in Lagos, where Union Bank sponsored eleven consecutive editions of an annual football academy that pairs sport with leadership development for children aged five to seventeen, run alongside coaches from West Bromwich Albion Football Club. Reflecting on the partnership at the close of the 2025 edition, the school’s founder and chief executive, Mrs Lai Koiki, put it plainly:
“We are being future-ready, we are preparing the youth for the future.”
It is the kind of unadorned framing that the Edu360 intervention tends to invite from the people closest to it.
The work is mapped to Sustainable Development Goals 4 and 8, which deal with quality education and decent work, but the more useful test is whether the interventions show up in the lives of the people they are meant to serve.
A MORNING AT EBUTTE ELEFUN
That test is easier to apply at the level of a single school.
As part of its back-to-school programme this year, Union Bank visited Ebutte Elefun High School in the Lafiaji Ward community on Lagos Island, distributing school bags and learning materials to hundreds of students. The contribution was funded and delivered by the Bank.
Present at the school that day was the Bank’s Chief Financial Officer, Oluwagbenga Adeoye, who attended the school as a boy. His role during the visit was personal, rather than operational. He spoke to the students about his own journey from those classrooms to the office he now holds, took their questions, and stayed to meet teachers. For students who rarely encounter senior professionals in person, the conversation was as much a part of the day as the supplies.
Outreaches of this kind are modest in scale. Distributing hundreds of bags do not transform a school system, and Union Bank does not claim that they do. What they do is reduce friction at a moment – the start of a school year, when small financial pressures can quietly push children out of consistent attendance. They also send a signal, both to the students and to the teachers around them, that someone outside the school gates is paying attention.
WHY A BANK, AND WHY EDUCATION
There is a reasonable question about why a financial institution should be in this work at all, and it deserves a direct answer rather than a sentimental one.
A bank’s long-term performance is bound up with the financial health of the households and small businesses around it. Children who stay in school longer earn more, save more, and are more likely to use formal financial services when they do. Teachers who feel supported, produce students who can read a contract, manage a budget, and start a business. None of this is altruism dressed up as strategy; it is simply the recognition that a bank’s commercial future and the country’s educational present are connected.
That recognition shapes how Union Bank approaches the work. Programmes are run with partner organisations that have deeper roots in the communities than any bank can claim on its own. Interventions are chosen for whether they address a real constraint, not whether they photograph well; and inclusion is treated as a discipline rather than a slogan, with specific work supporting girls, underserved learners, and students with disabilities.
THE HONEST LIMITS
It is worth naming what corporate education work cannot do. It cannot replace public investment, fix curriculum gaps, or compensate for the structural challenges facing Nigerian schools. A back-to-school outreach addresses access at a moment; it does not address learning outcomes over a year. A hackathon introduces students to technology; it does not, on its own, build a pipeline into the digital economy. Financial literacy sessions plant seeds; whether those seeds grow depends on what happens in the years that follow.
Union Bank of Nigeria is candid about this internally, and the structure of Edu360 reflects it.
The platform is designed to keep the Bank engaged with the same schools and communities over time, rather than rotating through one-off events. Whether that consistency translates into measurable shifts in attendance, completion, and downstream economic participation is the question the Bank itself is most interested in answering, and the next phase of the work is increasingly oriented around tracking it.
A QUIETER KIND OF CORPORATE CITIZENSHIP
There is a tendency, in Nigerian corporate communications, to describe CSR interventions in language larger than the work itself. Union Bank’s education programme is not transformational in any single year. It is steady, locally grounded, and built on the recognition that education is a long game in which banks are one of many players.
Ebutte Elefun is a useful illustration of the posture.
A school in Lagos Island. Hundreds of students who started the year with what they needed. A senior executive who walked back into the corridors he once knew, not to take credit but to remind a room full of teenagers that the distance between where they sit and where he sits is shorter than it looks.
That, more than any platform name or programme title, is what corporate responsibility in education looks like when it is taken seriously.
Show up. Stay. Build the systems that let the showing-up scale, and measure honestly in years, rather than headlines, whether it worked.

The distribution of instructional materials to public basic schools in Oyo State received a major boost on Friday, February 27, 2026, the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB) in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) officially flagged off the 2024 FGN-UBEC/SUBEB Intervention Programme in Ibadan.

The ceremony, held at OYOSUBEB car park, Agodi, Ibadan, marked the commencement of the large-scale supply of core textbooks, learning aids and other institutional materials to public primary and junior secondary schools across the state.

Speaking at the event, the OYOSUBEB Chairman, Dr. Nureni Aderemi Adeniran said the 2024 intervention in Oyo State covers the distribution of thousands of core subject textbooks and learning materials, including 19,289 copies each of Primary Mathematics Books 1, 2 and 3; 15,515 copies of Primary English Books 1–3; and 15,111 copies each of Nursery English Books 1, 2 and 3.

Also distributed were 6,673 copies each of Nursery Mathematics Books 1, 2 and 3; 2,500 copies each of Science and Technology Books 1–3; 40,000 six-year Continuous Assessment Cards ( Produced by Oyo SUBEB), 6,675 school bags; 6,675 pairs of sandals; 6,675 exercise books; 6,675 pencils; and 6,000 pairs of BESDA sandals.

He stressed that the materials are institutional resources designed to enhance instructional quality and improve learning outcomes, urging head teachers, principals and education managers to ensure strict accountability and proper utilisation.

“These materials are not for storage but for active classroom use. Their impact will be measured by improved academic performance and better learning outcomes,” he said.

Speaking earlier, the Executive Secretary of Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr. Aisha Garba, said the distribution goes beyond the supply of materials, describing it as a reinforcement of hope and a renewed commitment to quality, inclusive and equitable basic education for every Nigerian child.

Represented by the Zonal Director, UBEC, Mrs. Beatrice Okei, she noted that the intervention aligns with the Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, which prioritises education as a foundation for national development through strong literacy, numeracy, values and skills acquisition at the basic level.

According to her, UBEC’s statutory mandate includes coordinating the implementation of the Universal Basic Education programme nationwide, disbursing intervention funds to states and the FCT, setting and monitoring minimum standards, and promoting access, equity, quality, transparency and accountability.

To further reduce the number of out-of-school children nationwide, she disclosed that UBEC is distributing 15 million school bags, sandals and writing materials across the country to ease the financial burden on vulnerable families and encourage school enrolment and retention.

Describing the initiative as collaborative governance in action, she said the Federal and State Governments were working together to deliver qualitative and inclusive basic education.

In her remarks, SUBEB Executive Board member, Dr. Olukemi Adeosun, described the distribution as a significant step toward repositioning basic education in the state, noting that access to relevant textbooks enables learners to prepare ahead of lessons and eases the burden on teachers.

Also, the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers, Com. Raji Oladimeji commended the Oyo state government and SUBEB leadership for sustaining improvements in infrastructure, teacher recruitment and welfare, and called on teachers and learners to make judicious use of the materials.

The event underscored renewed collaboration between UBEC and Oyo State in strengthening institutional capacity, improving classroom delivery and ensuring that every child in public basic schools has access to the tools needed for academic success.

The Ogun State Government has announced plans to deliver a 900-capacity, Artificial Intelligence-enabled digital learning complex at Remo Secondary School, Sagamu, in a move aimed at strengthening technology-based education across the state.

Governor Dapo Abiodun disclosed activities marking the institution’s 80th anniversary, noting that the proposed facility represents a deliberate investment in modern learning infrastructure designed to prepare students for a rapidly evolving, knowledge-driven global economy.

He explained that the digital classroom project complements ongoing smart-education initiatives within the school, which already features a functional resource centre and a state-of-the-art robotics laboratory established to nurture innovation, problem-solving skills, and digital competence among learners.

Reaffirming his commitment to the school’s growth, the governor announced a financial pledge of ₦100m, stating that ₦50m representing half of the amount would be released immediately to kick-start development efforts. He also assured stakeholders that at least one of the outlined projects would be fully executed before the end of his administration.

Abiodun further disclosed that the state government had upgraded the school’s science laboratories, equipping them with modern facilities and teaching tools to ensure safer and more effective practical learning experiences for students.

He added that renovation works had also been completed on both the male and female hostels to improve accommodation standards, enhance security, and promote the overall well-being of boarding students.

Describing Remo Secondary School as a symbol of enduring heritage, the governor said the anniversary celebration went beyond mere commemoration of years of existence, emphasising the institution’s long-standing role in shaping generations of leaders and professionals.

He praised members of the old students’ association for their unwavering support and contributions to the school’s development, stressing that their collective efforts demonstrate a shared commitment to sustaining its legacy of excellence.

According to him, the projects and improvements carried out at the school reflect a strong belief in education as a foundation for future growth, as well as the power of collaboration between government, alumni, and the wider community.

Abiodun also revealed that the institution had been recognised as one of Ogun State’s model schools, urging students to remain focused on their academic pursuits, uphold strong moral values, and continue the tradition of excellence for which the school is known.

The Leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has concluded plans to establish a school of Communication in Lagos state, in partnership with the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti.

The groundbreaking event, which is to be held on Thursday, 5th of February 2026, will be attended by very important personalities, academicians, officials of the Nigerian University Commission, FUOYE’s officials, to mention a few.

According to information available at our disposal, FUOYE will be offering a distance learning programme in the school for communication students and when it’s finished, will issue a globally-recognised certificate, confirming the credibility of the institution.

Speaking on the reason behind the initiative, Primate Ayodele stated that he has always loved communications as a course of study, and he has always wanted to impact people in such a way that will be of benefit to them.

He made it known that he once studied mass communication at a prestigious institution in Nigeria because of his love for the profession, but his ministry hasn’t given him the luxury of time to practice.

He explained that establishing a school of communication, and partnering with an institution like FUOYE is a dream come true, and beyond that, is an opportunity for people interested in communication studies to achieve their aims.

“I have always loved communication, this is why I love to associate with journalists too. It has always been my dream to contribute to communication studies in Nigeria, and this establishment is one of those ways God has led me to do it.

“I was once a communication student, and I enjoyed it; however, I wasn’t able to practice because of my ministry, but my love for it has never diminished for once.

“Establishing a communication school is a dream come true, and I appreciate FUOYE for partnering with me on this movement. This is a huge opportunity for those who may be interested in achieving their dreams.”

Speaking further, Primate Ayodele stated that he would be establishing more even beyond Nigeria, with plans to go to Ghana, the Benin Republic, and some other countries.
