Tunde Kelani, veteran Nigerian filmmaker, has revealed that Rashidi Ladoja, the 44th Olubadan of Ibadan land , lent him N85,000 to produce his first featured film.

Kelani who is fondly called TK made the disclosure during a recent appearance on The Dupe Ajayi Show, where he reflected on the early days of his filmmaking career and Ladoja’s support.

The filmmaker said he decided to make his first film about a decade after returning from London Film School but lacked funds to execute the project.

“Ten years after London Film School, I realised that I hadn’t made a film. I decided that yes, it is time to make one. I put up a team. We had the Cinecraft, and we could donate our skills, but we still needed money,” he said.

“The money we needed according to that budget was 85,ooo naira. So Alhaji Lasisi Oriekun said, ” I have a brother oh, if we tell him maybe he can lend us the money.”

According to the filmmaker, the money enabled his team to produce Iwa, an adaptation of Adebayo Faleti’s Idamu Paadi Minkailu, which became his first film adaptation.

“His brother was Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja. He agreed and gave us the money. Collectively, from my experience, it was successful,” he said.

“We didn’t recoup the money, but whatever we made, I took it to Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja and said, ‘Excuse me, sir, please take this. This is what we have now.’”

Kelani also revealed that Ladoja later financed Opomulero, his company, which aimed at preserving Yoruba culture.

“Later on, I decided to start a company, Mainframe Production Opomulero, to document, promote and preserve Yoruba culture and history,” he said.

“I went back to Kabiyesi Olu Ibadan and told him my plan. I needed a lot of money. At first instance it was about 50,000 pounds and he funded it and even more than that.”

Ladoja was a one-term governor of Oyo from 2003 to 2007. He was also a senator representing Oyo South District from 1992 to 1993.

Advertising professionals have been urged to continuously evolve their skills, operating models and creative approaches to remain relevant in an industry being reshaped by artificial intelligence, changing consumer behaviour and emerging technologies.

Speaking at the annual meeting of the Association of Advertising Agencies of Nigeria in Lagos, Meksley Nwagboh, Divisional Head, Brand and Communications, Fidelity Bank Plc, described the transformation of advertising as an opportunity for practitioners to rethink how they create value, serve clients and connect brands with consumers.

Addressing participants on the theme, “AdVolution: The End of Advertising as We Know It and How to Win What Comes Next,” Nwagboh noted that the advertising industry has entered a new phase. He explained that the methods, structures and assumptions that defined the profession in previous years may no longer be sufficient in an environment influenced by data, automation, artificial intelligence and evolving audience expectations.

According to him, the end of advertising as previously practised should not be viewed as a crisis. Instead, it should serve as a call for agencies and professionals to evolve, build stronger organisations, develop more intelligent campaigns and create responsible communication systems.

He stressed that evolution requires more than adopting new technology. It involves developing a deeper understanding of people, culture and markets, while strengthening the strategic and creative capabilities required to use technology effectively.

Nwagboh cautioned practitioners against allowing artificial intelligence to weaken originality or replace critical thinking. He observed that the agencies most likely to lead the industry would not necessarily be those with the greatest number of AI tools, but those with strong strategic thinkers, a deep understanding of culture and the judgement to determine when and how technology should be applied.

He encouraged agencies to use artificial intelligence to reduce repetitive work while preserving the originality, imagination and human insight that distinguish impactful advertising. In his view, technology should support creativity rather than diminish it.

The continuing evolution of the industry also requires agencies to reconsider the role of data. Nwagboh explained that future-ready agencies must be able to convert data into insight, insight into strategy, strategy into compelling stories and those stories into measurable results. He added that technology would remain a tool, while creativity, trust and relevance would continue to shape the relationship between brands and their audiences.

President of the Association of Advertising Agencies of Nigeria, Lanre Adisa, similarly urged agencies to embrace change and develop the capabilities required to compete in a rapidly evolving environment. He identified the failure to adapt as a greater threat than change itself and emphasised the importance of talent development and a stronger understanding of how emerging technologies can complement human creativity.

Also speaking, Tomiwa Aladekomo, Chief Executive Officer of Big Cabal Media, acknowledged that artificial intelligence was changing the rules of the industry. He, however, maintained that human creativity remained a critical differentiator because technology could support the creative process but could not replace intuition, cultural understanding and original thinking.

Kelechi Nwosu, Chairman of the conference and a member of the AAAN Board of Trustees, encouraged agencies to look beyond producing work for clients and explore opportunities to own intellectual property. He identified imagination as one of the industry’s most valuable assets and urged practitioners to apply it towards developing new and commercially rewarding idea

Representing the Governor of Lagos State, Gbenga Omotoso, Commissioner for Information and Strategy, described the conference theme as timely, noting that while technology continues to influence society and business, creativity remains a distinctively human capability.

The discussions underscored a common message for advertising professionals. Evolution is no longer optional. Agencies that deliberately invest in people, rethink established practices, adopt technology responsibly and remain attentive to changing consumer expectations will be better positioned to lead the next phase of the industry.

The future of advertising will therefore depend on the ability of practitioners to preserve the enduring strengths of human creativity while continuously adapting to new tools, behaviours and business models. In a marketplace where change is constant, evolution will remain the bridge between present relevance and future leadership.

Nneka Isaac-Moses, the TV host and wife of Isaac Moses,, has recalled the early days of their relationship when her husband could not afford to take her to a classy restaurant.

The couple, who rose to fame in the late 1990s on the award-winning cultural television show Goge Africa, recently appeared as guests on the Honest Bunch podcast.

During the interview, Nneka shared fond memories of their time together, including nights out at clubs and motorcycle rides.

“He would always take me to clubs. We will dance. We would go on an Okada,” she said.

She also reminisced about their first date, which did not go quite as she had expected.

The media personality said after dressing up beautifully for what she assumed would be an evening of fine dining she discovered that Isaac could not afford a standard restaurant so he took her to an Amala joint on their first date.

“You know he did not have a car. I told my friends that ‘the stupid guy wants dinner, so we are going’. And I dressed, wore heels that I, you know, dressed sharp for dinner on our first date. And I was actually considering him because he has this nice baritone,” she said.

“I now accepted. You know where this guy took me? Amala Shitta. You see the level? You see where he kept me?

“So we went to Amala Shitta. He stopped. The taxi dropped us, and then he came down.

“So, I thought I would wait for him to go do whatever while we proceed to Victoria Island. To fine dining. And then he came down.

“He said come down now. So casually, he turned and he is walking away and he is expecting me to follow him. And the taxi man is like, ‘Sisi, you go down, I want to go’.

“I came down, and I followed him. And then he walked into one restaurant like that, and then he queued up, and then he took a plate, and he turned around and said, ‘Take a plate. Pick one’.

“When I picked a plate, he looked around and said. Take a bigger one.

“I just said in my heart, ‘I’ll take it but you’ll never see me again. I took a bigger one, and then he added, I will buy you a turkey. The turkeys here are big.

“It is actually romantic because on that particular date, he could not buy a turkey for himself. What happened? He didn’t have enough money.”

The couple met in 1996 and went on to marry in October 1997.

The Permanent Chairman of the Southern Nigerian Traditional Rulers Council (SNTRC), Arole Oodua Olofin Adimula and the Natural Head of the Oduduwa race worldwide, the Ooni of Ife, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, CFR, Ojaja II, has paid glowing tribute to veteran Nollywood actor, theatre scholar and cultural icon, Pa Kola Oyewo, describing him as a pride of Yorubaland whose remarkable contributions to the growth of theatre, culture and education will remain indelible in history.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the Director of Media and Public Affairs, Ooni’s Palace, Otunba Moses Olafare, the Ooni who is also the Co-Chairman of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN) condoled with the family, friends, associates, and admirers of the late thespian, who passed away on Friday, June 12, 2026, at the age of 80.

The revered monarch noted that Pa Oyewo’s death marked the end of a distinguished era in Nigerian theatre and cultural scholarship, adding that the late actor devoted his life to promoting Yoruba language, culture and values through his exceptional performances on stage and screen.

Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Pa Oyewo became one of Nigeria’s most respected theatre practitioners, earning widespread recognition for his contributions to the performing arts and academia. Although a native of Oba-Ile, he spent much of his life in Ile-Ife, where he became a beloved figure and contributed immensely to the cultural and intellectual development of the ancient city.

The Ooni described the deceased as a custodian of Yoruba heritage whose works helped preserve indigenous traditions and inspired generations of actors, scholars and culture enthusiasts across Nigeria and beyond.

“Pa Kola Oyewo was a pride of Yorubaland, a distinguished scholar and a cultural ambassador who dedicated his life to the promotion of our rich heritage. Through his talent, wisdom and commitment to excellence, he brought honour not only to Ile-Ife and Osun State but to the entire Yoruba race and Nigeria as a whole,” the Ooni said.

The Ooni further stated that the late actor’s enduring legacy would continue to inspire future generations, noting that his impact transcended entertainment and extended to education, mentorship and cultural preservation.

While praying for the peaceful repose of the departed icon, the Ooni extended his heartfelt condolences to the Oyewo family and urged them to take solace in the exemplary life and achievements of their patriarch.

The Lagos International Jazz Festival (LIJF) delivered a powerful night of music, memory, and cultural reverence as it honoured legendary broadcaster and Afrobeat historian Benson Idonije in a special “Prelude to 90” edition of its Jams & Vibes session.

Held at Bature Brewery, the event brought together leading voices in Nigeria’s music and cultural space to celebrate a man widely regarded as a foundational figure in documenting the evolution of Afrobeat and the first manager of Fela Kuti.

Idonije, whose influence spans decades and generations—including his role as grandfather to Grammy-winning Afro-fusion star Burna Boy—was at the heart of the evening, receiving tributes that highlighted his enduring impact as a broadcaster, mentor, and cultural archivist.

The night featured a rich lineup of performances led by Hifro exponent Labule and the Agbajoshu Quartet, alongside saxophonist Dotun Bankole. Their delivery blended jazz, Afrobeat, and highlife into an expansive musical experience.

A standout moment came from a 7-year-old saxophone prodigy, Pink Sax Girl, whose performance drew admiration and symbolised the continuity of Nigeria’s musical heritage.

Other highlights included spoken word by ECA, percussive storytelling by Elnana-Afrika, and curated nostalgic sets from DJs Suns and Cheflon. Labule, backed by a 13-piece band, delivered a commanding performance that evoked the mystique of Lagbaja while asserting a fresh artistic identity.

One of the defining moments of the evening came when Afrojazz guitarist Kunle Ayo joined the stage at Idonije’s request, sparking an improvised jam session that featured celebrated vocalists Yinka Davies and Gloria Ibru.

The session, marked by fluid improvisation and cross-genre synergy, blended jazz, Afrobeat, and highlife into a deeply evocative performance. Labule later closed the night with renditions of classics associated with Lagbaja and Femi Kuti, sealing the tribute with both homage and innovation.

Beyond the music, tributes from industry figures and longtime associates painted a portrait of Idonije as more than a broadcaster. Speakers described him as a teacher, mentor, and one of the quiet architects of Nigeria’s modern music narrative.

In his response, Idonije reaffirmed his lifelong passion for broadcasting and mentorship, reflecting on his relationship with Fela Kuti as both professional and deeply personal.

Family representative Ronami Ogulu also expressed appreciation to the organisers and attendees for celebrating a legacy built on storytelling and cultural preservation.

Speaking at the event, LIJF founder and CEO of Inspiro Productions, Ayoola Sadare (Shaddie Bobo), described Idonije as a mentor and “father of the festival,” noting that celebrating him at both 80 and 90 underscores the festival’s commitment to honouring legacy.

Supported by a broad cultural network, the event further cemented LIJF’s role as a leading platform for jazz and cross-genre African music, particularly within the global observance of Jazz Appreciation Month and International Jazz Day.

The LIJF 2026 special edition stood out not just as a tribute, but as a cultural statement—reinforcing the importance of preserving history while inspiring new creative expressions.

As the night came to a close, it left behind a clear message: the legacy of Benson Idonije is not static it is alive, evolving, and deeply woven into the fabric of Nigerian music.
