Unity, Patriotism and Diaspora Engagement Take Centre Stage as Nigerians in Asia Rally Behind President Tinubu’s Vision

In a remarkable display of unity, patriotism, cultural pride and diaspora engagement, members of the Nigerians in Asia for Asiwaju (NAAS) movement, alongside supporters of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, gathered in Saitama, Japan, for the highly anticipated Renewed Hope Barbecue 2026. The event was championed by prominent Nigerian community leader Shonde A. Samuel, popularly known as Sammy Japan who serves as the Vice President of the Nigerian Union Japan and the President of the Nigerian Union Kyushu. According to Samuel, Tokyo serves as the headquarters of the Nigerian Union in Japan and hosts the Nigerian Embassy, with the national leadership of the Union based there. He explained that the Union operates through regional structures across various cities and prefectures, with Kyushu comprising communities in Fukuoka, Kitakyushu, Kumamoto, Kagoshima and other surrounding areas. As President of the Kyushu chapter, Samuel oversees activities within the region and reports directly to the national leadership in Tokyo in his capacity as Vice President of the Nigerian Union Japan.

The gathering, designed to celebrate community, strengthen bonds among Nigerians abroad, and promote support for the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government of Nigeria, attracted Nigerians from various parts of Japan and across Asia. The colorful event, which took place on May 10, 2026, at 5-Chome Tsukagoshi, Warabi Seiri Park 11, Eyaleti 18, Saitama, Japan, created a vibrant atmosphere of fellowship, networking, cultural exchange and political engagement.

By Oluwatoyin Mathnuel

At a press briefing recently held in Lagos by Human Rights activist called Centre for Human and Socio-economic Rights Group CHSR under the leadership of President, Comrade Alex Omotehinse, has alleged that certain interests were working to derail the ongoing judicial process surrounding the murder of two indigenous son of Ajiran land; Mr. Sheriff Ishola Salami and Prince Kazeem Ademola Akinloye, who were killed in separate incidents in April 2023 and August 2024 respectively.
Omotehinse said the organization was compelled to address the media because of what it described as disturbing developments capable of undermining public confidence in the administration of justice.

According to him, the matter has evolved beyond a routine criminal investigation which now represents a broader assessment of the integrity of Nigeria’s law enforcement and judicial institutions.

The CHSR referenced disclosures made by the immediate past Lagos State Commissioner of Police, now Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Moshood Olohundare Jimoh, during a briefing at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja, on February 19, 2026.

The group noted that police investigators reopened the case following the emergence of fresh evidence, leading to the arrests of Safiu Fatai, popularly known as “Fabo,” and Yusuf Ismaila, also known as “Bariga,” in January and February 2026 respectively.

According to police findings cited by CHSR, the suspects were linked to the killing of Sheriff Ishola Salami, who was murdered on April 18, 2023, in Moba Town, Eti-Osa, as well as the fatal shooting of Prince Ademola Akinloye along Chevron Road, Ajiran, on August 26, 2024.

Investigators reportedly alleged that Salami was ambushed, abducted to a secluded location and shot multiple times at close range. Police further claimed that a similar operational pattern was employed in the killing of Prince Akinloye.

CHSR also referred to police allegations that the suspects confessed to involvement in both killings and implicated Alhaji Ahmed Tajudeen Akanbi as the alleged sponsor of the attacks. According to the police account, the suspects claimed they were promised financial rewards and other incentives in exchange for carrying out the murders.

The police subsequently declared Akanbi wanted before his eventual arrest and return to Nigeria for further investigation and prosecution.

While commending security agencies for making progress in the case, the rights group expressed concern over delays in prosecution, warning that prolonged legal proceedings could create opportunities for interference and undermine the quest for justice.

“We are alarmed by activities aimed at discrediting legitimate investigations and frustrating the prosecution process,” Omotehinse said. “Civil society advocacy should not become a shield for criminality or a tool for obstructing justice.”

The organization further criticized what it described as coordinated campaigns seeking the release of suspects before the conclusion of legal proceedings, arguing that such actions risk eroding public confidence in the rule of law.

Attention of the media, audience and fellow Nigerians was called on a major issue raised during the briefing concerned an incident that allegedly occurred during court proceedings on June 4, 2026.

CHSR President Omotehinse alleged that operatives attached to the Delta Force Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti, acted on complaints from supporters of the principal suspect and directed members of the victims’ families to remove a bus belonging to the Ojomu Royal Family from the court premises over allegations that surveillance equipment had been installed in the vehicle.

The group described the development as troubling, claiming that while restrictions were imposed on relatives of the deceased, supporters of the suspect allegedly moved freely within and around the court premises.

According to CHSR, the incident raises questions regarding neutrality, professionalism and the protection of victims’ rights throughout the trial process.

Speaking emotionally at the briefing, Mrs. Adeola Ogundimu-Akinloye, sister of the late Prince Ademola Akinloye, said the family remained resolute in its pursuit of justice.

She lamented what she described as sustained intimidation and pressure surrounding the case but expressed confidence that the truth would prevail.

“We do not want anything more than justice,” she said. “If justice is not allowed to prevail, then nobody can truly feel safe. We remain confident that truth and justice will ultimately triumph.”

Also speaking, veteran activist Shina Loremikan condemned public campaigns advocating the release of the principal suspect.

Drawing parallels with Nigeria’s historic struggles against colonialism and military dictatorship, Loremikan argued that justice must not be compromised by influence, wealth or political connections.

“The court is not a marketplace where justice can be traded,” he stated. “When innocent people are murdered, society has a responsibility to ensure accountability through lawful means.”

He urged journalists, civil society organisations and members of the public to closely monitor the proceedings and continue demanding transparency and fairness throughout the trial.

The CHSR also called on the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, to remain the “.non- compromised Tijani Fatai’ of ages by ensuring prompt arraignment of all suspects and facilitate a seamless judicial process free from undue interference.

In addition, the group advocated increased security deployment in the Ajiran community to ease tensions and reassure residents as the legal proceedings continue.

CHSR maintained that the Ajiran double murder case has become a defining test of institutional credibility and public trust in the nation’s justice system.

“The memories of the victims demand nothing less than full accountability,” Omotehinse stated. “CHSR remains committed to ensuring that justice is neither compromised nor denied. We will continue to engage relevant stakeholders until the matter reaches a lawful and logical conclusion.”

As proceedings continue, public attention remains focused on whether the justice system can navigate allegations, counter-allegations and competing public narratives while guaranteeing a fair, transparent and impartial trial for all parties involved.

Legal observers note that the outcome of the case could have far-reaching implications for public confidence in criminal justice administration, particularly in high-profile homicide cases where allegations of influence and interference often emergency than justice. Omotehinse concluded.

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ Lagos State Chapter, has honoured the late Chief Kudirat Olayinka Abiola as its Iconic Woman, in remembrance of three decades since her assassination on 4 June 1996.

According to the Chapter Chairperson, Comrade Jumoke Johnson, Chief Kudirat Abiola represented courage, principle, and selfless sacrifice in Nigeria’s pursuit of democracy and justice.

She described the recognition as NAWOJ Lagos’ tribute to a woman whose activism reshaped the nation’s political trajectory.

“Chief Kudirat Abiola was more than the wife of Chief MKO Abiola. She was a leading activist, a strategist, and an unyielding voice for justice, even at great personal risk,” Johnson stated.

“Three decades after her death, her legacy continues to inspire women across journalism, governance, civil society, and every arena where equity is pursued.”

The Chapter Secretary, Comrade Anu M. Thomas, said the Iconic Woman recognition was created to spotlight women whose contributions have influenced society and mentored generations.

She noted that Kudirat Abiola’s bold mobilization of women, civil society groups, and international partners during the annulment crisis remains a defining example of leadership and dedication.

“Kudirat demonstrated that journalism and activism converge when truth is threatened,”.

Thomas said. “As women journalists, we are strengthened by her example of deploying her voice, influence, and resources to defend what is right, even in perilous times.”

The Association urged government at all levels to preserve Kudirat Abiola’s legacy through policies that safeguard women human rights defenders and journalists.

It also called on media institutions to amplify coverage of women’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic evolution.

“Her passing on 4 June 1996 was a national loss. Yet her life endures as proof that one woman, guided by courage and conviction, can transform a nation,” Johnson added.

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ Lagos State Chapter, solemnly extends her profound condolences to the National Chairperson of NAWOJ, Comrade Aisha Ibrahim, following the unfortunate demise of her beloved daughter-in-law.

In a statement issued by the Lagos Chapter, the Chairperson, Comrade Jumoke Johnson noted that the tidings of the loss struck with immense sorrow and disbelief.

‘The transition of the late daughter-in-law represents not only a personal bereavement for the Ibrahim family, but a moment of collective grief for the entire NAWOJ sisterhood across Nigeria’ The Chairperson emphasized that death, though an inevitable ordinance of the Almighty, remains a painful test that leaves families and communities with a void difficult to fill.

“We received the report of your daughter-in-law’s passing with heavy hearts and a deep sense of loss. Words are inadequate to capture the pain this moment carries, yet we wish to reassure you that you are surrounded by the prayers, empathy, and solidarity of every member of NAWOJ Lagos. We stand shoulder to shoulder with you in this trying season, beseeching Allah, the Most Merciful, to envelop you and your family with divine comfort, patience, and unshakable strength. May His light dispel the darkness of grief and uphold you as you navigate this difficult path,” the statement conveyed.

Johnson described Comrade Aisha Ibrahim’s exemplary leadership, as a beacon of wisdom, resilience, and motherly devotion to women journalists nationwide and therefore urged all executives and members to support her especially with prayers at this critical period.

I urge our National President to find solace in the cherished memories of her late daughter-in-law — her kindness, warmth, and the positive imprint she left on all who knew her.

NAWOJ Lagos also acknowledged the overwhelming show of love and support from colleagues, friends, and stakeholders, noting that such unity in moments of sorrow reflects the true spirit of sisterhood that binds the Association.

“We pray that the Almighty Allah overlooks her shortcomings, accepts her good deeds, and grants her a place in Al-Jannah Firdaus. We pray He strengthens the Ibrahim family, binds your hearts together, and transforms this period of mourning into one of enduring faith and fortitude. May the legacy of love, compassion, and unity she shared continue to serve as a source of healing and inspiration for all of you,” the statement concluded.

The Centre for Human and Socio-Economic Rights (CHSR) speaks today with a deep sense of pain, outrage, and national concern over the disturbing events that have unfolded in recent days, events that reflect not only a worsening security crisis but a heartbreaking erosion of empathy, solidarity, and justice in our country.

We unequivocally condemn the shameful and violent disruption of peaceful protesters, including members of the Take-It-Back (TIB) Movement and other civil society organizations, by elements reportedly linked to the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). These were not criminals. These were citizens, young Nigerians, advocates, and concerned voices who gathered peacefully to mourn, to protest, and to demand accountability in the face of unbearable insecurity.

At the heart of this protest lies a tragedy that should shake every conscience, the abduction of students in Oyo State and the horrific killing of a Male Teacher. These are not mere headlines. They are human lives, dreams cut short, families shattered, and a painful reminder that nowhere and no one is truly safe anymore.

It is therefore profoundly distressing that, at a time when the nation ought to unite in grief and demand urgent solutions, those expected to lead the struggle particularly student bodies have instead turned against their own people. This is not just disappointing; it is a betrayal of history, a betrayal of conscience, and a betrayal of the Nigerian people.

The attack on peaceful protesters is not only barbaric; it is inhumane. It is an assault on the very soul of democracy and a cruel attempt to silence voices crying out against suffering, fear, and neglect. It sends a dangerous message that even grief must be suppressed, and that citizens must endure pain in silence.

But Nigerians cannot and must not be silenced.

Across the country, insecurity has become a shared nightmare. From banditry to kidnappings, from the targeting of students to the killing of innocent citizens, the threat is no longer distant, it is immediate, pervasive, and indiscriminate. It does not ask about religion. It does not consider tribe. It does not respect status. It affects us all.

Today it is students. Tomorrow, it is workers. The next day, it could be anyone.

This is why CHSR calls on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and all civil society organizations to rise beyond hesitation and stand shoulder to shoulder with the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT). This is not a teachers’ struggle. This is not a sectoral issue. This is a national emergency.

We call on them to peacefully mobilize, to lend their voices, and take to the streets in lawful solidarity, not out of defiance, but out of duty to a nation in distress.

Silence at this moment is complicity.

Equally, we cannot ignore the deepening economic hardship that continues to suffocate the average Nigerian. Policies at federal, state, and local government levels have compounded suffering, leaving millions struggling to survive, let alone live with dignity. The same citizens now facing hunger are also forced to live under the constant shadow of fear.

This is an unbearable burden.

CHSR therefore demands:

– An immediate and transparent investigation into the attack on peaceful protesters, with full accountability for all involved.
– The unconditional protection of citizens’ rights to mourn, protest, and express grievances without fear.
– Urgent and sincere government action to address the escalating insecurity across Nigeria.
– A united front by labour unions and civil society to demand justice and protect the Nigerian people.
– Immediate policy redirection to alleviate the crushing socio-economic hardship facing citizens.

Nigeria stands at a painful crossroads. The cries of its people are growing louder, heavier, and more desperate. To ignore them is to risk a deeper fracture, one that may take generations to heal.

We must choose compassion over repression, justice over silence, and unity over betrayal.

CHSR stands firmly with the Nigerian people in their pain, in their struggle, and in their hope for a safer, fairer nation.

Fidelity Bank Plc recorded 37.9 per cent growth in gross earnings to N434.95 billion in first quarter 2026 as the international commercial bank continued to expand its core banking market share.
Interim report and accounts of Fidelity Bank for the three months ended March 31, 2026 released at the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) showed that gross earnings rose from N315.42 billion in first quarter 20025 to N434.95 billion in first quarter 2026, representing an increase of 37.9 per cent.
The top-line performance was driven by impressive growth in the bank’s core business operations with interest incomes rising by 22.8 per cent to N314.48 billion in first quarter 2026 as against N256.10 billion in first quarter 2025.
With net interest income at N180.97 billion, the bank closed the period with profit before tax of N92.48 billion. After taxes, net profit stood at N74.47 billion for the three-month period. Earnings per share remained high at N5.69, underlining the capacity of the bank to reward its shareholders.
The balance sheet of the bank also emerged stronger. Total assets crossed the N11 trillion mark to N11.35 trillion by March 2026 compared with N10.46 trillion recorded in December 2025. Customers’ deposits increased from N6.89 trillion to N7.38 trillion. Total equity rode on the back of earnings growth to a 27.5 per cent increase from N1.09 trillion in December 2025 to N1.39 trillion by March 2026.
The first quarter 2026 results further consolidated the strong earnings outlook of the bank, which had successfully completed its recapitalisation amidst impressive earnings performance in 2025.
Fidelity Bank had recorded double-digit growths in interest and non-interest incomes as well as key balance sheet items during the year ended December 31, 2025.
The audited report showed that gross earnings rose from N1.04 trillion in 2024 to N1.52 trillion in 2025, an increase of 45.6 per cent. Interest and similar incomes had grown by 38.7 per cent from N803.1 billion in 2024 to N1.11 trillion in 2025. Fees and commission incomes also rose by 44.7 per cent from N78.4 billion to N113.4 billion. The bank recorded net profit after tax of N242.4 billion in 2025.
The bank’s balance sheet emerged stronger with total assets rising by 18.6 per cent to N10.46 trillion in 2025 as against N8.82 trillion in 2024. Customer deposits increased by 16.1 per cent from N5.94 trillion to N6.89 trillion, reflecting continued franchise strength and an improved funding profile. Net loans and advances meanwhile declined by 2.4 per cent to N4.28 trillion in 2025 as against N4.39 trillion in 2024, attributable to customers paying down on their mature obligations.
The bank had in 2025 strengthened its capital position, with eligible capital rising to N561 billion, above the regulatory minimum of N500 billion for banks with international authorisation. In addition, capital adequacy had remained robust, with Capital Adequacy Ratio of 30.94 per cent by December 2025 as against 23.47 per cent by December 2024.

Managing Director, Fidelity Bank Plc, Dr. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, said the first quarter 2026 results reinforced the bank’s strong and resilient business model.
She noted that with the remarkable success of its recapitalisation programme and continuing expansion, Fidelity Bank has entered a new era of growth and impressive returns.
“We are on a stronger footing and confident that we will set new growth records that are reflective of our legacy and the future we are working on,” Onyeali-Ikpe said.
