In Agege, the political ground is shifting. Across Wards, a coalition of stakeholders has publicly rejected former Agege Local Government Chairman Ganiu Egunjobi’s bid for the Lagos State House of Assembly seat representing Agege ConstituencyII. The message is blunt and unified: “We can’t endure this again.”

For many in the community, the rejection is less about one election and more about closing a chapter they say was marked by marginalization and stifled participation.

The core grievance is simple: broken trust. Stakeholders allege that during his eight-year tenure as Agege LG Chairman, Egunjobi sidelined party members and community leaders who did not fall within his inner circle.

“From Ward A to Ward E, Honourable Ganiu Egunjobi has let down lots of Agege political stakeholders,” one Ward A leader stated.

The complaint is that political engagement under his administration became a one-way street, where ideas and input from outside his team rarely gained traction.

The criticism hits closest to home in Ward A, Egunjobi’s own base in Isale Oja, Agege. Stakeholders there say the area saw little to no visible developmental impact during his time in office. Beyond infrastructure, they argue, the bigger loss was political inclusion.

“No one could brainstorm an idea to Honourable Ganiu Egunjobi or his team and have it accepted,” a party chieftain claimed.

For a constituency that expects its leader to be a bridge, many feel he became a gatekeeper.

Political leadership, stakeholders argue, is about influence, inspiration, and shared vision. By that standard, they say Egunjobi’s leadership style fell short.

“When he got the power as Chairman, many political stakeholders lamented,” one source said. The concern is that authority was used to control rather than empower, with allegations that his approach jeopardized the careers of several local political figures in Ward A and beyond.

Much of the frustration is directed at what stakeholders call a concentration of power within a single political bloc. They allege that Egunjobi’s godfather has dominated appointments across Agege LG and Orile Agege LG, installing his son as Chairman of Agege LG, and placing loyalists as Vice Chairman and SLG in both councils.

“Only his candidates occupy these offices,” a stakeholder said. The fear expressed is that this model could extend beyond Agege if unchecked, potentially influencing appointments across Lagos’ 55 LGs and LCDAs.

Stakeholders describe the situation as “political captivity.” They claim that supervisory councillors meant for other groups within the party were never installed after appointment, effectively pushing rival factions aside. “For too long, other political groups were pushed aside,” one member said. The sentiment is that democracy at the grassroots level has been narrowed to benefit a single mandate under the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Transparency is another flashpoint. Stakeholders say there has never been clarity on how local government funds are spent on projects in Agege and its environs.

“Nobody knows how much is being spent. No one is accountable to the people,” a community leader stated.

They argue that government resources should not be used to oppress or exclude citizens, and that public office requires public accountability.

Interestingly, the same stakeholders congratulated Egunjobi’s godfather for securing the sole House of Representatives ticket unopposed, calling his 23-year influence in Agege politics a milestone. “It means he has won many stakeholders’ hearts,” one said.
But they draw a line: long tenure does not equal automatic endorsement for all allies.

“His tenure as leader in Agege politics has ended,” a stakeholder declared, pointing to last year’s Lagos State House of Assembly crisis as a turning point.
It is obvious, only Honourable Desmond Elliot is fingered out as a scape goat.

However, the rejection is being framed as a demand for equity. “What’s good for the goose is good for the gander,” stakeholders argue. They say brilliant politicians with leadership charisma in Agege have been sidelined for too long, and that the community deserves broader representation. “Major stakeholders in Ward A are saying this candidate can never fly in Agege,” one source said, signaling that the opposition is organized and ward-based.

With the 2027 political cycle approaching, Agege appears to be at an inflection point. Stakeholders say the community has been repositioned politically, but that repositioning must include inclusion and fairness. “This political shenanigans must stop. Enough is enough,” was the closing refrain at a recent stakeholders’ meeting. Whether the party leadership heeds the call remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: in Agege, the old formula of top-down selection is facing its stiffest resistance in years. The question now is whether the APC will recalibrate or press forward with its chosen candidate.

The Coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Kosofe Local Government, driven by its commitment to good governance, peaceful coexistence, and the preservation of a safe and healthy environment for all residents, has taken keen interest in the recent developments following the All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives primary election held on Saturday, 16th May 2026 within Kosofe Federal Constituency.

From available information and declarations made at the conclusion of the exercise, Mayor Dele Oshinowo was announced by the designated returning officer as the duly elected candidate and flag bearer of the APC for the 2027 general elections.

However, the Coalition note concerns the contradictory position emanating from the camp of the incumbent MHR Hon. Mrs. Kafilat Ogbara, which initially laid claim to victory and has subsequently asserted that the election did not hold.

This inconsistency is both troubling and capable of generating confusion, tension, and unnecessary political heat within the Kosofe Federal constituency.

As a human rights-driven body and active stakeholder in Nigeria’s pro-democracy journey having played roles in the struggle against military rule, the Coalition considers it imperative to caution against any actions or narratives that may overheat the polity or threaten the peace and stability of Kosofe and, by extension, Lagos State.

Kosofe Federal Constituency is known for its relative peace, political maturity, and civic consciousness.

These values must not be undermined by post-primary disputes or conflicting claims capable of inciting unrest or creating security challenges for law-abiding residents.

OUR POSITION

* That any grievances arising from the conduct or outcome of the primary election should be addressed strictly through established party mechanisms and, where necessary, or through a courts of competent jurisdiction.

– That no camp or political actor should resort to self-help, inflammatory rhetoric, or actions capable of disrupting public peace.
– That the integrity of the democratic process must be preserved through lawful, transparent, and peaceful channels.
– We hereby call on the security agencies to checkmate any act or conduct that can ignite or promote crises in Kosofe Federal Constituency.

CALL FOR CALM AND RESPONSIBILITY

The Coalition therefore calls on all aspirants, their supporters, and political stakeholders to exercise restraint, demonstrate political maturity, and prioritize the collective interest of Kosofe above individual ambitions.

We strongly warn against any attempt to incite violence, mobilize unrest, or create an atmosphere of insecurity within the Kosofe Federal constituency.

CONCLUSION

* Based on the announcement of the returning officer, one Mr Gabriel Olusesan Dada, four aspirants contested the primary election namely Mayor Dele Oshinowo (M) 18,614 votes, Chief Mrs Yetunde Arobieke (F) 7,389 votes Remi Odunsi (F) 5,726 votes and Hon. Kafilat Ogbara (F) 5,450 votes.

* Therefore, according to the announced results Mayor Dele Oshinowo won the election in a landslides victory with the highest number of votes.

As a Civil Society coalition, we remains steadfast in its advocacy for justice, fairness, and democratic accountability, we will continue to monitor developments and speak out where necessary to ensure that peace, order, and good governance prevail.

The Coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Kosofe Local Government hereby expresses its strong objection and unequivocal condemnation of the recent endorsement statement credited to the Lagos State Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Mustapha Sego, concerning political representation within the Kosofe Constituency 2.

At the outset, the Coalition considers it both inappropriate and unacceptable for any individual or group particularly one lacking direct residency or indigenous ties to the Kosofe community to attempt to exert undue influence on the democratic choices of our people.

Representation within Kosofe Constituency 2 must remain the exclusive prerogative of its residents and stakeholders, guided by informed consent, credible leadership evaluation, and constitutional democratic processes.

The reported circumstances surrounding this endorsement raise grave concerns about external interference, coercive political signaling, and the attempted imposition of preferences through influence that does not reflect the will of the people.

Such actions undermine democratic norms, weaken community autonomy, and threaten the peace and order that the constituency has consistently maintained.

Kosofe Constituency 2 is not a political territory to be dictated by external actors or leveraged for sectional interests.

It is a community defined by civic consciousness, indigenous heritage, and a long-standing commitment to participatory governance.

Any attempt to override this reality constitutes a direct affront to the collective dignity and democratic rights of its people.

POSITION OF THE COALITION

– The purported endorsement by the NURTW leadership, under the circumstances described, is rejected in its entirety as lacking legitimacy within the context of Kosofe Constituency 2.

– The people of Kosofe Constituency 2 will not accept any form of political imposition, intimidation, or externally driven influence in determining their representation.

– That democratic representation must emerge solely from the free will of the electorate, expressed through lawful and transparent processes.

– All political actors and affiliated groups are strongly advised to operate within the bounds of civility, legality, and respect for community autonomy.

– Relevant security and regulatory authorities should remain alert to prevent any actions capable of disrupting public peace or undermining democratic engagement within the constituency.

CALL FOR RESPONSIBILITY AND DEMOCRATIC CONDUCT

The Coalition calls on all stakeholders to exercise restraint and to engage constructively within the framework of democratic values.

Political legitimacy cannot be manufactured through endorsements imposed from outside the constituency, but must be earned through trust, performance, and genuine grassroots acceptance.

CONCLUSION

The Coalition of Civil Society Organizations in Kosofe Local Government remains unwavering in its commitment to defending the democratic rights of residents and safeguarding the integrity of the political process within Kosofe Constituency 2.

We reiterate that the future of Kosofe Constituency 2 will be determined solely by its people, through lawful, peaceful, and participatory means.

The claim by former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, that major political blocs within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State were absent from the growing political movement around Senator Sharafadeen Alli has continued to attract reactions from party stakeholders, many of whom have described the assertion as inaccurate and misleading.

Adelabu, during a recent visit to the APC secretariat in Ibadan, reportedly stated that the Lamists, Ajimobi political family, Akala bloc, Teslim Folarin group, and his own faction constitute about 95 percent of the APC structures in Oyo State, insisting that none of the major tendencies attended the so-called consensus movement for Senator Alli.

However, visible political developments and alignments within the party appear to contradict the former minister’s position.

One of the most notable developments was the presence of Hon. Lamiju Akala, a prominent son of the late former Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala, who openly accompanied Senator Sharafadeen Alli during the purchase of his gubernatorial nomination form. Political observers view the development as a clear indication that influential figures within the Akala political family are actively identifying with the movement.

In the same vein, Baba Iyiola Oladokun and Alhaji Fatai Ibikunle, both regarded as respected figures within the political structure of late former Governor Lam Adesina, were visibly present and actively associated with the BSA movement.

Also identified among those supporting Senator Alli are prominent APC stakeholders including Senator Hamzat Ayo Adeseun, Asiwaju Yemi Aderibigbe, Hon. Sumbo Olugbemi, Hon Odebunmi Bunvic, former Speaker Rt. Hon. Asimiyu Niran Alarape, Alhaji Karimu Olomi, Baba Dijo Ogundiran, Oloye Sina Alabi, Akogun Akeem, and Alhaji Majeed Adekunle Oloya, many of whom are widely recognised as political associates of the Teslim Folarin tendency within the party.

Further strengthening the movement was the visible participation of key APC leaders from the Oke-Ogun axis, including Alhaji Hammed Ayinla, Chief Sunday Owoade, Pa Egbedokun, and Pa Folaranmi, all of whom reportedly attended both the declaration of intent and the adoption of Senator Sharafadeen Alli as the consensus candidate.

The movement around Senator Sharafadeen Alli has equally continued to gather momentum as elected leaders, members of the National Assembly caucus, and influential party stakeholders across Oyo State openly identify with the growing coalition ahead of the 2027 governorship race.

Among notable figures associated with the movement are Sen Yunus Akintunde, Hon Akin Alabi, Hon Remi Oseni, Hon Tolulope Akande-Sadipe, Hon Akinmoyede Wasiu Lafi and Hon Akeem Adeyemi Skimeh, alongside several other elected officials and party stakeholders who have continued to align with the movement.

Political observers believe the increasing support base around Senator Alli reflects growing acceptance of his aspiration across different political tendencies within the APC, further strengthening perceptions that the movement enjoys broad grassroots and elite backing across the state.

Politics is dynamic, and support within political parties is often driven by individual conviction, consultations, and evolving interests. It is therefore inaccurate to make sweeping claims that entire political blocs rejected or stayed away from a movement when influential personalities from those same blocs actively participated.

More importantly, consensus within a political party is not measured solely by the attendance of a few high-profile leaders, but by the growing acceptance and support across stakeholders, party elders, grassroots mobilisers, youth groups, and loyal party members.

Observers have also questioned Adelabu’s decision to place himself alongside late political heavyweights such as Lam Adesina, Abiola Ajimobi, and Adebayo Alao-Akala, men who built enduring political structures through electoral victories, governance, and years of grassroots leadership.

These leaders earned loyal followership after winning elections and leading the people. Their political families were not self-proclaimed, they were built through performance, sacrifice, and tested political influence across Oyo State.

The question many party faithful are now asking is simple, when exactly did Adelabu become a political leader with an established faction comparable to these political heavyweights?

Leadership in politics is not declared through press statements or public rhetoric. It is earned through electoral success, political consistency, grassroots dominance, and the ability to lead people to victory. Until now, Adelabu has not won a major election that would justify equating his political influence with those who governed Oyo State and built lasting political institutions.

It is therefore politically exaggerated to place himself in the same category as Lam Adesina, Ajimobi, and Akala as though they share the same historical political weight within Oyo APC.

Respect in politics is earned, and enduring political structures are built over time through victories, loyalty, sacrifice, and service to the people, not by mere claims or declarations.

Stakeholders further argued that it is politically misleading for Adelabu to speak as though he commands one of the strongest political structures in Oyo State when he is yet to establish such credentials through the ballot box.

Unlike the late political icons he referenced, Adelabu has not won even a local government chairmanship election, yet seeks to project himself as the leader of one of the dominant blocs within the party.

According to party faithful, political structures are not built on self-acclamation or media narratives. They are earned through victories, grassroots mobilisation, consistency, and proven leadership capacity over time.

Before laying claim to major factions within Oyo APC, many believe the fundamental question remains: What election has Adelabu personally won to validate such sweeping claims of political dominance?

Political analysts insist that influence in politics is measured not by loud rhetoric or public posturing, but by electoral records, loyal grassroots followership, and the consistent ability to deliver victories for one’s party.

Party faithful have therefore called for restraint in public statements capable of deepening internal divisions, stressing the need for inclusiveness, broader consultations, and collective efforts toward repositioning the APC for future electoral success in Oyo State.

In bid of a credible candidate emergency for Kosofe Federal Constituency ahead 2027 general election.

Coalition of civil society organisations in Kosofe has urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to present credible candidates for the forthcoming general elections.

The coalition made this clarion call a press conference held on Tuesday in Ketu area of Lagos state, through its co-conveners, Comrade Alex Omotehinse and Comrade Waheed Odunuga.

Omotehinse clarified that the engagement was organised in line with the coalition’s mandate to promote accountability, participatory democracy, and evidence-based civic engagement within Kosofe Federal Constituency ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Omotehinse disclosed that following a comprehensive review process, the coalition assessed governance outcomes within the constituency, with particular focus on developments recorded in Agboyi-Ketu LCDA between 2017 and 2025 under the leadership of the immediate past Executive Chairman, Mayor Dele Oshinowo.

According to him, the assessment was further strengthened by a stakeholders’ meeting held on April 15, 2026, where deliberations were conducted on aspirants seeking to represent Kosofe Federal Constituency.

“The coalition reached a unanimous position based on empirical evaluation, stakeholder inputs, and verifiable governance records,” he said.

Omotehinse listed key achievements attributed to Oshinowo’s tenure to include infrastructural expansion through the development of administrative complexes, legislative facilities, and modern markets, which enhanced institutional efficiency, created jobs, and boosted internally generated revenue.

He added that the administration also implemented sustainable water and sanitation projects, including multi-community industrial boreholes, improved road networks to enhance mobility and commerce, and invested in education through school construction, rehabilitation, and student support initiatives.

Other areas highlighted include strengthened primary healthcare delivery through facility upgrades and medical outreach programmes, as well as youth empowerment and economic inclusion initiatives focused on skills development and enterprise support.

The coalition concluded that Oshinowo has demonstrated a consistent record of public service anchored on delivery, innovation, and accountability.

“An objective comparative analysis places him in a leading position among aspirants across political divides. His tenure provides a credible governance framework that can be effectively translated into legislative representation at the federal level,” he said.

The group called on constituents to prioritise competence, integrity, and proven performance in the electoral process, stressing the importance of informed civic participation.

“We encourage citizens and stakeholders within Kosofe Federal Constituency to support leadership that reflects tested capacity and a clear commitment to inclusive development,” he added.

Omotehinse maintained that the position of the coalition was based on empirical evaluation and guided by the principles of transparency, justice, and accountable governance.

He further stated that the coalition unanimously agreed that Mayor Dele Oshinowo is best positioned among aspirants to represent Kosofe Federal Constituency at the National Assembly.

Speaking further, he noted that Oshinowo’s tenure as chairman was marked by notable achievements, including the development of housing estates, resolution of community disputes, construction of stadia, and transformation of markets into modern facilities.

“We conducted thorough assessments and engaged residents of the constituency. Though we are not members of any political party, we believe the APC should present a credible candidate. If the party fails to do so, he may consider contesting on another platform,” he said.

On the issue of consensus, Omotehinse said it remains an internal party matter but expressed confidence that Oshinowo would emerge if a primary election is conducted.

Addressing concerns over the Owode Onirin demolition, he stated that although the incident occurred during Oshinowo’s tenure, investigations revealed it was carried out by a private individual following a court judgment on a portion of the land.

He explained that the demolition, which affected parts of the spare parts market, is currently a subject of litigation, adding that Oshinowo was no longer in office when the situation escalated in August 2025.

The Alaba International Market in Ojo, Lagos, came alive on Thursday, April 16, 2026, as traders, political leaders, and stakeholders gathered for the commissioning of an industrial borehole constructed by Hon. Olawale Aganga-Williams.

The project, designed to improve access to clean and potable water within the busy commercial hub, was officially commissioned by former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Her Excellency Princess Serah Sosan Adebisi, amid cheers from traders and community members who described the initiative as timely and impactful.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Aganga-Williams reiterated his commitment to grassroots development and the welfare of his constituents. He emphasized that access to clean water remains a critical necessity for both residents and business owners, assuring the community of more people-oriented projects in the future.

The event attracted notable political figures, including the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule; the Executive Chairman of Oto-Awori LCDA, Hon. Kareem Abiodun Azeez; and the former Chairman of Ojo Local Government, Hon. Yinka Durosinmi. All commended the initiative, describing it as a reflection of responsive and responsible leadership.

In her remarks, Princess Serah Sosan Adebisi praised the effort and encouraged continued support for leaders who prioritize the needs of the people. Similarly, Hon. Durosinmi expressed satisfaction with the project, highlighting its direct benefits to traders and residents.

The President of the Amalgamated Alaba International Market, High Chief Camilus Nnamdi, expressed deep appreciation on behalf of the market leadership, reaffirming their support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and pledging continued mobilization for the party.

Also speaking, the market’s Public Relations Officer, Hon. Buba Bello Muhammed, commended Hon. Aganga-Williams for fulfilling his promise, noting that the borehole would significantly ease the daily activities of traders who depend on water for their businesses.

In recent times, Nigeria’s political landscape has continued to provoke deep concern among critical stakeholders and observers. There is a growing sense of dissatisfaction driven by what appears to be a persistent decline in empathy, commitment, and structured political mentoring within the leadership hierarchy of many political parties—particularly among the dominant and ruling class.

This trend is not only troubling but poses a significant threat to the sustainability of inclusive governance and democratic development.

Across party lines, there is an observable pattern of leadership disconnect, characterized by poor reward systems, selective engagement, and an apparent lack of genuine interest in nurturing competent and deserving individuals for leadership roles. For many committed members, especially those who have invested time, resources, and personal credibility into party development, the experience has become increasingly discouraging.

It is not uncommon to encounter sentiments of frustration among party faithful who feel marginalized by an emerging leadership culture that prioritizes loyalty over competence and patronage over merit. In some extreme instances, influential political figures have even expressed the belief that governance can function effectively without a structured team—undermining the very essence of collaborative leadership and institutional governance.

As a stakeholder with considerable experience within Nigeria’s political system, I have observed—albeit with concern—a growing wave of disaffection among party members, particularly young professionals who once viewed politics as a platform for meaningful contribution and service.

Today, that perception is rapidly changing.

The absence of empathy and commitment in leadership has fostered an environment where many young, intelligent, and capable individuals feel undervalued. Instead of being encouraged and empowered, they are often subjected to a culture of servitude, exclusion, and selective recognition. This has led to a gradual withdrawal of some of the brightest minds from active political participation.

The implications are far-reaching.

A political system that fails to attract and retain its best minds inevitably creates a vacuum—one that is quickly filled by mediocrity. This reality is becoming increasingly evident in governance outcomes, where declining performance can often be traced to a deficit in intellectual capacity, strategic thinking, and innovative leadership.

Historically, Nigeria’s early political eras—particularly during the First and Second Republics—benefited from a leadership culture that valued competence, rewarded contribution, and actively mentored emerging leaders. These systems attracted some of the finest minds, who in turn shaped policies and governance frameworks that drove national development.

Today, however, there appears to be a departure from those ideals.

Rather than fostering excellence, the current system in many instances promotes a structure where less competent but loyal individuals are elevated above more qualified counterparts. This not only discourages excellence but also fuels political apathy, defections, and fragmentation within party systems.

Many frustrated professionals are now faced with difficult choices: compromise their values to fit into a flawed system, withdraw entirely from politics, or seek alternative platforms where their contributions may be better appreciated.

None of these outcomes serve the long-term interest of Nigeria’s democracy.

If this trend is left unchecked, the consequences will be profound. The nation risks further entrenching a cycle of underperformance in governance, weakened institutions, and a widening gap between leadership and the people.

There is, therefore, an urgent need for introspection and reform.

Political leaders at all levels must recognize their role not just as office holders, but as mentors and nation builders. Leadership must be redefined to reflect empathy, inclusiveness, fairness, and a genuine commitment to developing others. Structured mentoring systems, transparent reward mechanisms, and merit-based opportunities must become the cornerstone of political engagement.

Encouragingly, a new wave of emerging leaders is beginning to challenge the status quo. There is a growing movement committed to restoring the values of quality leadership, accountability, and people-centered governance. This movement seeks to create an enabling environment that attracts brilliant, innovative, and forward-thinking individuals into politics.

The goal is clear: to build a political system that is not only competitive but also competent—one that delivers sustainable growth and development for all.

The future of Nigeria’s democracy depends on the choices we make today. Rebuilding trust, restoring merit, and institutionalizing empathy in leadership are no longer optional—they the are imperative.
