The 26th edition of the MILO Basketball Championship continued with the successful conclusion of the Central Conference regional finals, where Government Secondary School, Gboko, Benue State, and Father O’Connell Science College, Niger State, emerged champions in the girls’ and boys’ categories respectively.

For 26 years, MILO has remained committed to youth development through school sports, using basketball as a platform to inspire discipline, teamwork, resilience and confidence among young people. Through the championship, MILO continues to create opportunities for students across Nigeria to discover their potential, build character and pursue excellence both on and off the court.

This year, over 13,000 schools applied to participate in the MILO Basketball Championship nationwide, reflecting the continued growth and relevance of the platform. At the Central Conference regional finals, seven schools competed for a place at the National Finals. Government Secondary School, Gboko, won the girls’ category with a 63–31 victory over Nigeria Defence Academy Staff Secondary School, Kaduna State, while Father O’Connell Science College, Niger State, won the boys’ category after a hard-fought 56–53 win over Government Secondary School, Gwarinpa Life Camp, Abuja.

The opening remarks were delivered by the MILO Sports Marketing Manager, Mrs. Funmilola Oyewole, on behalf of the Category Manager, Mr. Gilbert Tweneboah-Koduah. In his address, Mr. Tweneboah-Koduah highlighted the role of the championship in inspiring young athletes to pursue excellence beyond the game.

“Every game played at this championship reminds us of the courage, determination, and promise that exist in our young people. These students are not only competing for medals; they are learning to believe in themselves, to work as a team, and to rise above challenges. At MILO, we are proud to continue supporting a platform that helps young people turn their passion into purpose,” he said.

Friday Victoria Ada of Government Secondary School, Gboko, Benue State, was named the Most Valuable Player in the girls’ category. Wearing jersey number 13, she contributed 25 points out of her team’s 63 points, playing a key role in their victory.

In the boys’ category, Idris Mohamed of Father O’Connell College, Niger State, was named Most Valuable Player. Wearing jersey number 5, he delivered an impressive performance, contributing 20 points out of his team’s 56 points.

The Central Conference is the second of four regional conferences in the 26th MILO Basketball Championship. With the Savannah and Central Conferences now concluded, the championship will move to the Atlantic Conference, where nine schools each in the boys’ and girls’ categories will compete for a chance to join the race to the National Finals.

At the Savannah Conference, Government Secondary School, Zing, Taraba State, emerged champions in the girls’ category, while Family Support Programme School, Katsina State, won the boys’ category. Together with the Central Conference champions, they form part of the growing list of regional winners heading towards the grand finale.

The event was attended by dignitaries from FCT ministries, as well as representatives from NSSF, NCSF and FIBA.

The winning teams from the Central Conference will advance to the National Finals, scheduled to hold in Lagos on July 2, 2026, where they will compete with other regional champions for the ultimate title.

FirstBank, West Africa’s premier financial institution and the leading financial inclusion service provider, has announced its strategic sponsorship of the second edition of ChessMasters, Africa’s largest school chess tournament. The announcement was made at the official press conference of the tournament held on 16 March 2026 at Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos.
ChessMasters is an annual chess tournament designed to equip the next generation with critical thinking, problem-solving, and leadership skills. The competition targets children in primary school aged between 6 and 11 years old. Organised by Eko Hotels and Suites & KEY Academy , ChessMasters was created to provide thousands of children across Nigeria with opportunities to develop modern educational skills, bringing schools together on a national stage.
Speaking at the press conference, Olayinka Ijabiyi, Acting Group Head, Marketing & Corporate Communications at FirstBank, said, “Our sponsorship of ChessMasters 2026 reflects our commitment to building talents and communities, driving inclusion, and deepening engagement through our First@Sports initiative, a platform that celebrates talent and promotes social impact through sports. With over a century of supporting legacy sports in Nigeria, we are proud of our enduring partnerships – 105 years with the Georgian Cup, 65 years with the Lagos Amateur Golf Championship and 35 years with the Dala Hard Court Tennis Championship.”
Ijabiyi further highlighted how the sponsorship aligns with FirstBank’s sustainability pillars of Education, Health, and Welfare. “We recognise the potential of chess to help school-age children challenge themselves, think critically, and compete at the highest level, hence we see the tournament as a launchpad for a pan-African movement leveraging chess as a tool for education, empowerment, and leadership development. We are utilising this platform as another avenue to promote social impact and drive positive change in the community.”
Caline Chagoury Moudabar, Director and Co- Founder of ChessMasters and her partner Damilola Okonkwo of Key Academy, expressed appreciation for FirstBank’s support, noting that the partnership will help scale the impact of ChessMasters and inspire more schools to participate. “We are happy to welcome FirstBank on board. This collaboration will boost chess development in Nigeria and promote critical thinking among young minds. With support from partners like FirstBank, we are opening the doors of participation to more children and more schools in this year’s edition.”
Prince Adeyinka Adewole, Vice President of the Nigeria Chess Federation, commended the initiative, emphasising its role in nurturing future chess talents. “Chess connects people, ideas, and opportunities. It teaches children to be analytical, patient, and manage their time and resources effectively. Chess also improves concentration and has been particularly beneficial for children with autism.”
The second edition of ChessMasters will be held on Saturday, 2 May 2026 at Eko Hotels and Suites, Lagos. The competition is open to 150 schools across Lagos, with over 700 students expected to participate and vie for a total prize pool of N10 million.
FirstBank’s involvement in the 2026 edition of the tournament reinforces the potential of ChessMasters to become a launchpad for African children, leveraging chess as a tool for education, empowerment, and leadership development.

When the final runner crossed the finish line at the 11 th edition of the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon (ABLCM), the applause began to fade. But for hundreds of workers across Lagos, the real work was just beginning. Major highways had been closed to facilitate the event. Tens of thousands of runners moved through the city in a coordinated surge of athletic endurance. Thousands of bottles of water and energy drinks were distributed, alongside sachets containing essential medical supplies and medication. The race route itself was meticulously prepared, lined with banners, barricades, medical tents and precision timing systems that ensured safety, organisation and accurate performance tracking from start to finish.
What followed was the part few cameras lingered on, yet it remains one of the clearest indicators of institutional progress. Within minutes of the race conclusion, coordinated sanitation teams fanned out across the marathon corridor. Their work went beyond sweeping. Waste was systematically
sorted. Plastic bottles were separated from general refuse. Sachets were gathered in bulk. Collection trucks moved along predefined routes, ensuring rapid evacuation of waste. Temporary race infrastructure was dismantled with quiet precision.
In a megacity like Lagos, speed is a necessity. Urban momentum cannot pause for long. The ability to restore order quickly after an event of this magnitude reflects operational discipline across interconnected systems, municipal authorities, environmental agencies, private waste management partners and event coordinators.
Globally, large-scale sporting events are no longer evaluated solely by participation numbers or prize purses. Sustainability has emerged as a defining metric. Environmental responsiveness is now a core measure of credibility. Cities seeking tourism growth, foreign investment and international partnerships must demonstrate that scale does not compromise responsibility. The 2026 marathon provided a compelling case study in this evolution.
The clean-up operation itself generated meaningful economic activity. Temporary employment opportunities emerged for sanitation workers and logistics personnel.
Recycling partners engaged in material recovery, reinforcing circular economy value chains. What was once viewed as routine waste disposal has evolved into a structured ecosystem of environmental services, a sector of increasing importance in modern urban economies.
This level of sustainability was the result of deliberate planning. Effective post-event recovery requires route mapping, waste volume projections, coordination between www.accessbankplc.com sponsors such as Access Bank Plc and municipal bodies, contingency planning for
congestion points and clear communication protocols.
Each edition of the marathon has built on lessons from the last. International participation has expanded. Accreditation standards have strengthened. Media visibility has grown. Most importantly, environmental management has become embedded in the marathon’s operational framework rather than treated as an afterthought. Progress rarely arrives in dramatic leaps, it advances through incremental improvements, refined systems and institutional learning. Just as elite runners close performance gaps through disciplined training, cities strengthen their global standing through consistent operational excellence.
The 2026 marathon therefore tells a story that extends far beyond athletic achievement. It is a story of coordination, sustainability as strategy rather than slogan, and the often unseen workforce, sanitation workers, planners, volunteers, security officials and environmental partners, whose discipline sustains the spectacle. Because in the end, global cities are judged by how well they host and how responsibly they restore. On the marathon day in Lagos, it was the runners who demonstrated endurance and the systems, and the people behind them, who ensured that when the
cheering stopped, the city kept moving.

The Access Bank Lagos City Marathon will take place on Saturday, February 14, 2026. The event maintains its status as one of Africa’s leading road races and exemplifies the impact of sustained collaboration, unified objectives, and civic engagement in advancing the interests of the city and its residents.

Since its inception, the marathon has evolved from a bold vision into a globally recognised annual sporting event. Over the years, the participation level has grown significantly, organisational standards have strengthened, and the race has earned increasing international credibility. Central to this progress has been Access Bank’s consistent, long-term sponsorship, focused not on short-term promotion, but on building a professional, safe, and world-class sporting platform.

By consistently investing in logistics, safety, and effective operations, this partnership has elevated the marathon from simply a sports event to a cultural and civic milestone for Lagos. The expansion of the marathon demonstrates how ongoing dedication and teamwork can make a significant difference.

Beyond competition, the marathon has played a notable role in shaping Lagos’ culture and global perception. It has encouraged a stronger fitness and wellness culture among residents, normalising jogging, walking, and group training as everyday lifestyle habits. The race day also fosters community spirit, with thousands of volunteers, spectators, and residents coming together to support participants.

Internationally, the event has positioned Lagos as a city capable of hosting large-scale, world-class events, helping to shift perceptions towards vibrancy, organisation, and cultural energy. In doing so, the marathon has helped Lagos see itself, and be seen, as a city of movement, resilience, and possibility.

Volunteerism and civic participation remain integral, strengthening social cohesion and community pride. Ultimately, its success is measured not just in kilometres run, but in communities strengthened and lives positively influenced.

Environmental responsibility has also become an important focus of the event. Structured waste management and post-race clean-up initiatives are implemented along race routes, with increasing emphasis on responsible disposal and recycling awareness. Through collaboration with volunteers and local groups, the marathon demonstrates that large-scale events can balance excitement with environmental care, proving that celebration and responsibility can co-exist when sustainability is treated as a shared duty.

For athletes, the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon serves as a gateway to global opportunity. Nigerian runners gain increased visibility and competitive credibility, while the presence of elite international athletes raises performance standards and enhances professional recognition. With proper race certification and organisation, athletes’ achievements carry global relevance. Access Bank’s international presence further supports cross-border participation, creating a two-way exchange where local talent gains exposure and international runners experience Nigerian culture firsthand.

As Lagos looks forward to the race day on February 14, it is worth recognising Access Bank’s pivotal role in powering the Lagos City Marathon year after year. Through its sustained sponsorship, Access Bank has demonstrated outstanding commitment not only to the sporting event but also to the city’s growth and global connections. The institution deserves commendation for its significant contributions that have helped make the marathon a symbol of vitality and aspiration for Lagos.

On a particular Saturday each February, before dawn breaks over Lagos and thousands of participants prepare for the event, the city is filled with an unmistakable sense of anticipation. Roads typically bustling with traffic become thoroughfares devoted to new possibilities. Whether it is first-time runners adjusting their bibs or elite athletes focusing on the challenge ahead, a recurring question arises in both public discourse and executive meetings: What motivates Access to consistently support Africa’s largest road race year after year?

The response does not lie merely within sponsorship objectives or marketing strategies. Rather, it emanates from a philosophy of leadership, one that recognises institutions as interconnected with society, measuring true success by purpose, people, and enduring social impact, not solely by financial outcomes.

For Access, the Lagos City Marathon is a statement of belief in Africa’s potential, a commitment to collective progress, and a powerful reflection of the values that guide how we build businesses and engage with communities across the continent.

Marathon as Metaphor for Africa’s Journey
A marathon is not won in the first kilometre. It demands patience, resilience, discipline, and an unshakable belief in the finish line, even when it feels impossibly far away. These qualities mirror Africa’s own development journey and the realities of building enduring institutions on the continent.

Access sees the marathon as a living metaphor for what it takes to create sustainable impact. Growth is rarely linear. Progress often comes with setbacks. But those who stay the course, who invest consistently, and who keep moving forward ultimately create lasting change. This philosophy shapes how we approach banking, partnerships, innovation, and leadership.

Supporting Africa’s biggest road race is therefore not incidental. It reinforces the idea that success, whether personal, corporate, or national, is built through long-term commitment rather than short-term wins.

People at the Centre of Progress
What makes the Lagos City Marathon truly special is its inclusivity. On race day, the streets belong to everyone: professionals running for personal bests, young people discovering the joy of movement, families cheering from the sidelines, and communities coming together in shared celebration.

This diversity reflects Access’s people-first philosophy, believing that progress is most powerful when it is inclusive, when platforms are designed to welcome participation rather than privilege exclusivity. By championing the marathon, we invest in a space where people from all walks of life are united by a common goal: to push beyond perceived limits.

Leadership Beyond Profit
Today’s business environment demands more from corporate leaders. Stakeholders increasingly expect institutions to contribute meaningfully to society, not as an afterthought, but as an integral part of strategy. Access embraces this responsibility.

Championing the Lagos City Marathon is one of the ways leadership is projected from Access. It is an opportunity to demonstrate what values-driven leadership looks like in action. The race promotes physical and mental wellness, encourages healthy lifestyles, and reinforces the importance of balance, lessons that are as relevant in the workplace as they are on the road.

More importantly, it shows that leadership is not about standing apart from society, but about standing with it. Running alongside communities. Investing in shared experiences. Creating platforms that inspire confidence and ambition, especially for young Africans who are redefining what is possible.

Economic and Social Impact That Lasts
The impact of the marathon extends far beyond race day. Each edition generates economic activity across multiple sectors, hospitality, transportation, logistics, retail, media, and tourism. Small businesses thrive, jobs are created, and local vendors benefit from increased footfall.

By attracting international runners and visitors, the marathon positions Lagos as a global destination capable of hosting world-class events. It challenges outdated narratives and showcases Nigeria’s ability to deliver excellence at scale. This visibility matters, not just for the city, but for the continent.

Building a Legacy of Inspiration
Perhaps the most enduring value of the marathon lies in inspiration. For many runners, crossing the finish line is a personal victory, proof that they can commit, endure, and succeed. For spectators, it is a powerful reminder of human potential and collective spirit.
These moments matter. They shape mindsets. They encourage people to set bigger goals, whether in health, career, or community. They reinforce the belief that with the right support and determination, progress is possible.

Access champions this race because of the belief that Africa deserves platforms that inspire millions to move, dream, and achieve more.

Leading the Long Race Together
Leadership, like a marathon, is not a sprint. It requires vision, endurance, and the willingness to keep going even when results are not immediate. Access is committed to running this long race with Africa, investing in people, institutions, and platforms that drive sustainable growth.

As runners take their marks every February, we are reminded that progress is built one step at a time. By championing Africa’s biggest road race, Access shows its belief in collective effort, long-term impact, and the power of leadership that moves with society, not ahead of it, and never apart from it. Because when Africa runs, we all move forward.

The President commends the Super Eagles for putting behind them the disappointment of the semi-final loss to host nation Morocco last Wednesday.

The Super Eagles overpowered Egypt, defeating the seven-time AFCON winner, in a penalty shootout after the regular time, in which the Nigerian team dominated.

President Tinubu states that the Super Eagles players, through their victory, have once again demonstrated the determination, persistence, and can-do spirit associated with our country.

The President remarks: “Despite their good run during the tournament, the Eagles lost the semi-final match to Morocco during the penalty shootout last Wednesday, and our people’s hopes of winning the championship were dashed.

“However, our players remained undaunted, and exhibiting the resilience of the Nigerian spirit, their efforts have now paid off.

“We will all be proud of them as they receive their hard-earned bronze medal on Sunday in Rabat, Morocco.

“Thank you, our gallant Super Eagles. Thank you, our national team players. This bronze medal surely feels good like gold.”

After every Super Eagles match at the ongoing AFCON 2025 until yesterday, Primate Elijah Ayodele of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church has always been called names because of his prophecy regarding the team.

He had said that the Super Eagles would not be eliminated in the tournament and mentioned some players who would not perform well as expected. He also had a message for the coach.

According to him, the Nigerian coach has ‘bad luck’ which will affect the Super Eagles. He also stated that Ademola Lookman will not ‘help’ the team and that if all instructions are followed, the team can get to the final in the tournament.

Among these prophecies, Primate Ayodele gets called out for what he said regarding Ademola Lookman because, in previous matches, Lookman either scored or had an assist, but the prophecy is far beyond that. Unfortunately, many Nigerians don’t try to understand prophecies; they read them like story book, and due to that, they either misinterpret or misunderstand them.

To start with, what does it mean to help someone? People only need help when they are stranded; help is only needed when there are no other ways in critical times. If I had no money to buy food and someone suddenly sent me N2,000, I would be very grateful because what that person has done is help me out of my disastrous moment. On another look, if I had all the food in the world, had money in my account, and someone sent me N2,000, I may not even remember to appreciate the person because I didn’t need it. It wouldn’t make any difference if the person sent it or not; I would still be fine. This is exactly what help looks like.

In the case of Ademola Lookman, he truly did well in the past matches, but if he didn’t score in those matches, Nigeria would still be at the stage we are presently. If Lookman wasn’t in our previous matches, we would still win. We scored a lot of goals until yesterday, and if the player’s goals were removed from the tournament, we would still conveniently get to the semi-final stage.

The help Super Eagles needed was during the semi-final match when it actually mattered. Lookman scoring us a winning goal would have meant a lot to Nigerians, he would have been forever cherished if he had ‘helped’ Nigeria because he was actually in the position to do that, but what did we see? Lookman was almost not seen throughout the match, and even made mistakes when he had the opportunity to create goals.

Since the match ended yesterday, the street has been unusually silent because naysayers were unable to drag Primate Ayodele’s name again; they have no doubt been covered by shame because of their earlier backlashes against the prophet.

On his prophecy regarding the coach, it’s very obvious that there’s no luck on the side of Eric Chelle and that pushed him to make mistakes just a few minutes before penalties. Instead of retaining his best players for the penalty shoot-out, he brought in people who destroyed the chances of the country.

No matter what anyone has said or done against Primate Ayodele, some even went as far as placing a curse on the prophet, but now, they have to swallow their words because Primate Ayodele has been vindicated.

Long live the prophet, Selah

Since the beginning of the African Cup of Nations 2025 in Morocco, Nigerian prophet, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has constantly faced backlashes because of his prophecy regarding the Super Eagles and some players.

Just days before the tournament began, Primate Ayodele released his 2026 prophecies and while answering questions asked by journalists, he made it known that there are some players who will not ‘help’ the Super Eagles, among which was Ademola Lookman.

However, He made it known that the Super Eagles won’t be eliminated quickly and that the team can get to the final stage and battle for the first position.

Since the tournament began, Ademola Lookman has no doubt performed absolutely well, scoring goals and providing assists for his teammates, especially Victor Osimhen, to score goals.

Due to this, many have been calling Primate Ayodele a fake prophet because Lookman turned out to be great against what he earlier said, but in his defence, He urged Nigerians to be patient and wait till the end of the tournament. In fact, many were trying to link his prophecy to the fracas that happened between Osimhen and Lookman, but the prophet kept mute, asking critics and supporters to keep calm.

There is now a trend going on against Primate Ayodel,e which has to do with his name being tagged to anything relating to prophecies on the Super Eagles or AFCON 2025. The other day, Pastor Adeboye ‘mocked’ a certain prophet for his prophecy regarding Super Eagles; the man of God didn’t mention anyone’s name, but people were quick to tag it as Primate Ayodele.

Just Saturday, after the Super Eagles recorded a victory against Algeria, former Force PRO, Muyiwa Adejobi, while celebrating the victory,y made a statement, “Where is that prophecy about Super Eagles against?”, without mentioning anyone’s name, and immediately, people started tagging Primate Ayodele’s name to it.

While some of these critics are social media users, it’s sad to see journalists who are meant to uphold the ethics of their profession, regardless of the pressure, validate these fake things against the man of God.

As a journalist, it is expected that you report exactly what your source is saying; if your source is saying A, you shouldn’t add B to it because that simply means you have added your opinion to what is meant to be a report of someone’s account, which isn’t acceptable.

In the case of Muyiwa Adejobi, Primate Ayodele never prophesied against the Super Eagles; rather, he was supportive of the team when he said the Super Eagles can get to the final of the tournament, so it’s mysterious that a credible platform like Leadership Newspaper would quote the former Force PRO mentioning Primate Ayodele when he never did.

Even in the case of Pastor Adeboye, he never mentioned Primate Ayodele, but some journalists were quick to say he was referring to the prophet, and this is getting worse by the day.

Primate Ayodele is definitely not the only man of God to have prophesied regarding the AFCON tournament. While he may be the most popular and has the most famous prophecies, he wasn’t the only one. If Adeboye or Adejobi comes around tomorrow and says they weren’t talking about Primate Ayodele, what would be the fate of these journalists and their media organisations?

Sincerely, Journalists need to be very careful when writing these things that are not real. If your source didn’t say a thing, adding your own interpretation just shows how mischievous you can be. This needs to stop totally.
