The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 28-year-old school bus driver, Onome Lucky Ughagha, for allegedly kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 14-year-old female student in Sapele, after reportedly demanding and collecting ₦503,000 in ransom from her father.

The incident was reported at the Sapele Area Command on 20 October 2026 by the victim’s father, who alleged that the suspect abducted his daughter while she was preparing to leave for school. The suspect subsequently contacted him, demanded ₦503,000 and threatened to kill the minor if the ransom was not paid. Following payment, the victim was reportedly abandoned along Oton Road, Sapele, where she was reunited with her family in a traumatised condition, with indications of sexual assault.

Upon receipt of the report, operatives of the Sapele Area Command immediately commenced investigations, while the victim was taken to a medical facility for examination and treatment. The school principal and vice principal were invited for questioning, while efforts were intensified to apprehend the suspect, who had abandoned the school bus and fled. Acting on credible intelligence, the operatives subsequently traced the suspect to his hideout in the Ajimele area of Sapele, where he was arrested on 23 October 2026. During preliminary interrogation, he reportedly confessed to his involvement in the crime. Arrangements are underway to transfer him to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Asaba, for further investigation.

The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Samuel E. Erale, psc, mnips, condemns the incident and reiterates the Command’s commitment to protecting children from all forms of violence and exploitation. He assures that investigations will be thorough and that anyone found culpable will be brought to justice. The CP further calls on school authorities, parents and transport operators to exercise greater vigilance in safeguarding children, stressing that the safety of every child entrusted to their care must remain paramount.

The Delta State Police Command has rescued a 23-year-old kidnap victim, arrested eight suspects and recovered three firearms, alongside 26 live cartridges and substances suspected to be Indian hemp, in separate intelligence-led operations conducted across the State between 20th and 23rd October 2026.

1. POLICE RESCUE KIDNAP VICTIM AT OWA-ALERO

On 20th October 2026, operatives of Owa-Oyibu Division, in collaboration with local volunteer groups, successfully rescued a 23-year-old man whom two suspected kidnappers abducted on 19th October 2026 at Owa-Alero. The victim was reportedly seized in front of his residence and dragged into a nearby bush. Following a report lodged by his brother, operatives commenced an intensive search of the surrounding bushes, leading to his rescue the following day. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing abductors.

2. RAID OF CRIMINAL HIDEOUT: ARREST OF SIX SUSPECTED CULTISTS, AND RECOVERY OF FIREARM, AND SUSPECTED ILLICIT DRUGS

On 23rd October 2026, operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), acting on credible intelligence, raided a hotel in Abraka suspected to be a hideout for drug-related activities. During the operation, six suspected cultists were arrested, while a bag containing a firearm and substances suspected to be Indian hemp was recovered. Some individuals fled upon sighting the operatives. Investigation is ongoing to establish the ownership and source of the recovered firearm, as well as identify other persons connected with the incident.

3. ARREST OF 62-YEAR-OLD SUSPECT, RECOVERY OF LOCALLY FABRICATED FIREARM, 24 LIVE CARTRIDGES AND SUSPECTED INDIAN HEMP

On 21st October 2026, operatives of the Special Anti-Kidnapping Unit (SAKU), Sector III, Ubuluku, acting on credible intelligence, raided the residence of one Richard Nmorsi, male, aged 62, at Ekuku-Agbor Community, Ika South LGA. A search of the premises, conducted pursuant to a duly obtained warrant, led to the recovery of one locally fabricated single-barrel firearm, 24 live cartridges and weeds suspected to be Indian hemp. The suspect was arrested, while the recovered exhibits were taken into custody for further investigation.

4. ARREST OF 56-YEAR-OLD SUSPECT, RECOVERY OF DOUBLE-BARREL FIREARM AND LIVE CARTRIDGE

On 23rd October 2026, operatives of SAKU Sector III, Ubuluku, acting on credible intelligence, raided the residence of one Amechi Osemeke, male, aged 56, at Ekuku-Agbor Community, Ika South LGA. During a search conducted with a duly obtained warrant, operatives recovered one serviceable double-barrel firearm and one live cartridge. The suspect was arrested, while an investigation is ongoing to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the possession of the firearm.

The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Samuel E. Erale, psc, mnips, reiterated that the command would sustain intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks, recovering illegally possessed firearms and safeguarding communities across the State. The CP urged residents to remain vigilant and provide credible information to the Police, assuring that no effort would be spared in ensuring the safety and security of all residents.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) over the weekend responded to a devastating road traffic incident at Mile 2, by Freeman Market, inward Apapa, in which a mother and her child lost their lives following the overturning of two heavily laden 20-foot containerized trucks.

The harrowing incident left both victims trapped beneath the overturned trucks and their massive containerised cargoes, sustaining catastrophic injuries that rendered their remains unrecognisable. The tragedy underscores the grave and often irreversible consequences of road traffic incidents involving heavy-duty articulated vehicles, particularly when laden containers become implicated in fatal collisions.

LASTMA’s rescue and recovery personnel swiftly responded to the scene to coordinate evacuation operations, secure the affected corridor and forestall further traffic complications. As an immediate traffic management intervention, the entire roadway was temporarily cordoned off, while vehicular movement was systematically diverted through the adjoining service lane to mitigate congestion, preserve operational safety and protect other road users from secondary incidents.

Demonstrating its operational preparedness and technical capacity for complex incident management, LASTMA’s Rescue and Recovery Team deployed a crane and a high-capacity tow vehicle to facilitate the arduous recovery operation. The specialised equipment was instrumental in the painstaking removal and evacuation of the overturned trucks and their heavily laden containerised cargoes.

Throughout the operation, officers of the Nigeria Police Force provided essential security reinforcement to ensure an orderly and secure recovery process. Following the evacuation, the victims’ remains were conveyed to the Police Mortuary in Yaba for the requisite procedures.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed profound sorrow over the tragic demise of the mother and her child, extending his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. He described the incident as an immeasurable human tragedy and prayed that Almighty God would grant the family the fortitude, resilience and spiritual strength to withstand the enormity of their devastating loss.

While commiserating with the bereaved family, Mr Bakare-Oki called on the relevant security agencies to undertake a comprehensive and painstaking investigation to establish the immediate and underlying causes of the fatal occurrence.

He stressed the importance of determining the precise circumstances that precipitated the overturning of the two articulated trucks and ascertaining whether mechanical deficiencies, excessive loading, improper cargo distribution, driver negligence or other contributory factors were responsible.

The General Manager further emphasised the imperative of scrupulous compliance with established road safety regulations, regular mechanical inspections, appropriate cargo securing procedures and responsible driving practices, particularly among operators of heavy-duty articulated vehicles conveying substantial containerised consignments.

He reiterated that the preservation of human life remains paramount and urged motorists, especially commercial truck operators, to exercise heightened vigilance, ensure the roadworthiness of their vehicles and adhere uncompromisingly to prescribed safety standards. He stressed that preventive vigilance, mechanical integrity and responsible driving are indispensable to averting avoidable fatalities on Lagos roads.
