The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi John Oyeniyi, psc, has reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to combating Gender-Based Violence (GBV) through continuous capacity building and professional development of police officers. The CP stated this at the Specialised Command-Specific Training for Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) of the Delta State Police Command on Gender-Based Violence Prevention Strategies, convened by the CLEEN Foundation and attended by CP Aina Adesola, psc, Commissioner of Police, Department of Training, Force Headquarters, Abuja, alongside other senior police officers.

In his address, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, psc, acipm, mnips, expressed profound appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, for his unwavering commitment to institutional reforms, capacity development, and the promotion of professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force. He noted that the training reflects the IGP’s vision of a modern, people-centred, and service-oriented Police Force capable of effectively addressing contemporary security and social challenges.

The Commissioner of Police described gender-based violence as a serious violation of human rights and a threat to societal development, stressing the need for Divisional Police Officers to adopt victim-centred approaches in handling GBV cases while maintaining professionalism, empathy, diligence, and strict adherence to extant laws and established policing standards. He urged participants to leverage the knowledge gained from the training to strengthen investigations, improve support for survivors, and enhance public confidence in policing.

CP Oyeniyi further commended the CLEEN Foundation for its sustained partnership with the Nigeria Police Force in advancing human rights, accountability, and professional policing. Also speaking, CP Aina Adesola, psc, underscored the importance of continuous learning and specialised training in equipping officers with the skills required to effectively respond to emerging policing challenges, particularly gender-based violence.

The training featured sessions on GBV prevention strategies, survivor-centred policing, investigative best practices, and multi-stakeholder collaboration aimed at strengthening the capacity of DPOs to effectively respond to GBV cases across Delta State. The Delta State Police Command remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting vulnerable persons, supporting survivors, and ensuring that perpetrators of gender-based violence are brought to justice.
