Although World Refugee Day is celebrated globally on June 20 each year, the African Refugees Foundation (AREF) held its commemorative event on June 18, bringing together stakeholders to raise awareness on the growing issue of displacement and the need for collective action.
Speaking at the event, Otunba Layi Oriowo ;Ā Global Ambassador of AREF, emphasized that refugees are not people far removed from us.
“Anyone can become a refugee at any time. Those who choose conflict over peace do not realize they are only one step away from becoming displaced persons. Likewise, those who abuse the environment may be closer than they think to becoming homeless, jobless, or both.”
The Chief launcher Barr. Raji Fashola ; Nigeria former minister of works, housing and two term Lagos state Governor noted that while some causes of displacement are beyond human control, many are preventable. Conflict, violence, and environmental degradation can be addressed through peacebuilding, responsible environmental practices, and community cooperation.
“There are many circumstances that are controllable and avoidable. As far as we are able, we must prevent the issues that lead to displacement. We must prevent conflict and pursue peace. We must learn to care for our environment and be our brother’s keeper.”
As part of its annual commitment, AREF continues to sensitize communities and governments on displacement issues while advocating for peace, conflict resolution, and environmental responsibility. The Foundation hopes to impact between 7,000 and 10,000 lives this year, subject to available resources.
The efforts of the Founder, Ambassador Olusola, were also highly commended for his vision, dedication, and unwavering commitment to supporting refugees and displaced persons across Africa.
