On Friday, the 14th of August 2026, Lagos State witnessed her first-ever state-run Alternative Secondary School for Girls. The first ever Nigeria’s formal alternative education is located at Old Ojo Road, Agboju, Amuwo-Odofin Lagos state — a landmark initiative of Nigeria First lady Mrs Oluremi Tinubu completed under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration.
The school which was commissioned by First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu (represented by Hajia Nana Shettima, wife of the Vice President), with Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu representing the Governor. It is designed to give out-of-school and vulnerable girls — those who dropped out due to poverty, early marriage, teenage pregnancy, displacement, or hardship — a second chance at education.
The curriculum offers accelerated learning alongside vocational skills including cosmetology, hairdressing, catering, and garment-making, plus vital psychosocial support. While the school was originally founded in 2007 by Senator Oluremi Tinubu, its full rehabilitation and official launch as the country’s first state-operated alternative school for girls marks a historic milestone for girl-child education in Nigeria.
