Saudi Arabia has executed two Bangladeshi nationals after a court convicted them of committing what authorities described as an “immoral act” inside a mosque in the holy city of Mecca.
According to a statement from the Saudi Ministry of Interior, carried by the state-run Saudi Press Agency (SPA), the two were identified as Nazrul Islam Abdul Basir and Siti Akhtar.
The Ministry said security authorities arrested the pair following the incident. After investigation, they were charged and referred to a competent court, which sentenced them to death under _ta’zir_ — a discretionary punishment under Islamic law.
The court cited the seriousness of the offence and the violation of the sanctity of the mosque. The verdict was upheld by the higher judicial authority, and a royal order was issued authorizing the execution.
The executions were carried out in the Mecca region on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.
The official statement did not specify the exact nature of the act, did not name the mosque, and did not state when the alleged incident occurred.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Consulate General in Jeddah has told The Daily Star that it was not notified before the executions. Dhaka says it has sent a diplomatic note to Riyadh seeking formal confirmation and further details about the case.
Claims circulating on social media that the couple were newlyweds executed for a forehead kiss have not been confirmed by any official statement.
