The African Refugees Foundation (AREF) is set to commemorate World Refugees Day 2024 with a special Food Outreach Programme, scheduled for June 20, 2024, at 12 noon. The event will take place at AREF’s Corporate Headquarters located at Plot 49, Babs Animashaun Estate Extension, Surulere, Lagos.
The programme will feature Sen. Gbenga Ashafa, Former Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Hon. Chief Volunteer of AREF, as the Special Guest of Honour.
Founded by the late Ambassador Segun Olusola, a distinguished Nigerian diplomat, broadcaster, and creator of the beloved TV drama series “The Village Headmaster,” AREF has been at the forefront of supporting refugees and displaced persons across Africa. Ambassador Olusola, who served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, launched AREF with a vision to provide humanitarian assistance and advocate for the rights and dignity of refugees.
“The theme for World Refugee Day 2024 is ‘Hope Away from Home’,” said Olujimi Olusola III, CEO of AREF. “This day, celebrated annually on June 20, draws attention to the plight of millions of refugees who have been forcibly displaced from their homes due to conflict, violence, or persecution. The theme focuses on solidarity with refugees and a world where they are welcomed.”
AREF’s mission is deeply rooted in the legacy of Ambassador Olusola’s work in media and public service. “The Village Headmaster,” which aired from 1968 to 1988, was one of Nigeria’s longest-running television series and played a significant role in promoting cultural heritage and social values. Ambassador Olusola’s contributions to the arts and his humanitarian efforts have left an indelible mark on Nigerian society.
The Food Outreach Programme aims to provide essential support and foster a sense of community among refugees in Lagos. Attendees can look forward to an afternoon of solidarity, support, and celebration of the resilience and courage of refugees.
