The African Refugees Foundation (AREF) commemorated World Refugee Day 2024 with a highly successful Food Outreach Programme at their Corporate Headquarters in Surulere, Lagos. The event, held on June 20, drew a significant gathering of refugees, supporters, and dignitaries, all united in solidarity and support of displaced persons.

The highlight of the event was the presence of Sen. Gbenga Ashafa, Former Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Hon. Chief Volunteer of AREF, who served as the Special Guest of Honour. In his compelling address, Sen. Ashafa emphasized the importance of community support and resilience in facing adversity, lauding AREF for its steadfast dedication to improving the lives of refugees across Africa.

This year’s World Refugee Day theme, “Hope Away from Home,” was prominently featured in the day’s activities. AREF’s CEO, Olujimi Olusola III, highlighted the theme’s significance, noting that it underscores the solidarity and welcome extended to refugees. “World Refugee Day is a reminder of the millions who have been forcibly displaced due to conflict and persecution. Today, we not only provide essential support but also celebrate their resilience and courage,” said Olusola III.

Founded by the late Ambassador Segun Olusola, a distinguished Nigerian diplomat and the creator of the iconic TV series “The Village Headmaster,” AREF has long been a beacon of hope for refugees. Ambassador Olusola’s vision of providing humanitarian assistance and advocating for the rights and dignity of refugees continues to inspire the Foundation’s mission.

Sen. Ashafa’s speech poignantly captured the essence of the day’s theme. “I am honoured to join you today as we flag off this week-long commemoration of the 2024 World Refugee Day. This year’s theme, ‘Hope Away From Home,’ serves as a bittersweet, yet timely reminder of the realities faced by refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Nigeria and across the world. For some of these people, the only kindness they will experience will come from how committed the rest of us are to finding solutions together and showing solidarity through results-driven action dedicated to alleviating their plight,” Ashafa stated.

He further emphasized that World Refugee Day is more than a date on the calendar; it is a call to action that compels us to acknowledge the struggles of those forced to flee their homes. Ashafa highlighted the staggering statistics provided by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC), reminding attendees that these figures represent real individuals with dreams and aspirations.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) urged the government and key stakeholders to intensify protection and support for refugees, asylum seekers, and IDPs. Executive Secretary of the NHRC, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, emphasized the urgent need for enhanced measures to safeguard vulnerable populations, many of whom are victims of insurgencies, natural disasters, and severe economic conditions.

The Food Outreach Programme, central to the day’s events, provided much-needed support to refugees, fostering a sense of community and belonging. The programme included the distribution of food and essential supplies, alongside cultural performances and speeches that celebrated the resilience and stories of refugees.

The event concluded with a reaffirmation of AREF’s commitment to advocating for and supporting refugees. The successful execution of the Food Outreach Programme demonstrated the power of community and the importance of extending hope and help to those in need especially at Lawson, Idi- Araba, Oko- Baba ( Ebute- Metta), Iyana-Iba, Igando, Ikotun, Owutu , Badagry axis and Iperu- Remo in Ogun state.
