The Joint National Assembly Committee on Works has expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work being executed on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, specifically the Ojoo to Iwo section in Oyo State.
The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Works, Mr Akin Alabi, who led the team, expressed the satisfaction when the team inspected the ongoing reconstruction on that section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, on Monday.
He praised the contractor, Reynolds Construction Company (RCC), for a good job.
“This part of the expressway has been a serious concern for a long time due to the high number of accidents and level of delays.
“We invited the Federal Ministry of Works and RCC, and I am glad they responded swiftly. They have done a very good job so far,” he said.
He noted that although the road project had yet to be fully completed, significant progress had been made.
He gave the assurance that assessments would continue.
“We are not at Uhuru yet; we will still revisit this area as we head to Oyo and Ogbomoso in a few weeks to ensure promises are kept.
“Special thanks to RCC, President Bola Tinubu and members of our team,” Alabi added.
On whether the work aligned with the contract terms, Alabi confirmed that the project followed the Bill of Quantities.
He, however, said that the committee would continue to review related documents and evidence gathered during the visit.
The Senate Minority Whip, Sen. Osita Ngwu, said that the committee was carrying out its constitutional oversight function.
“From the section we came through, people are clearly happy with the progress.
“As engineers, when we see work done to specifications, we give credit,” he said.
He, however, noted that areas, which still required attention, included the road shoulders and drainage systems necessary to protect the road from erosion.
Ngwu said: “We raised concerns, and the site representative assured us that protective drains and caps would be added.”
He said that RCC had promised to complete the work within two months, noting that about 95 per cent of the work had already been done.
“We are visiting several projects across the country.
“When we return to inspect the Oyo–Ogbomoso Road, we will also check this spot again to see if the promised work has been completed,” he added.
The lawmakers praised Tinubu for ensuring adequate funding for the road project.
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is a major economic artery linking Lagos to other South-West states and the northern part of Nigeria.
