The Board of Trustees of the African Refugees Foundation (AREF) deeply mourns the passing of our esteemed Patron and Board Member, Ambassador (Dr.) Christopher Olusola Kolade, CON (1932–2025) — a revered elder statesman, diplomat, and exemplary leader whose life was defined by integrity, faith, and service to humanity.
Dr. Kolade, who served as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, at the age of 92. His family announced the news in a statement on Thursday, expressing gratitude to God for a life “devoted to His service and to humanity.”
Born on December 28, 1932, in Erin-Oke, Osun State, Dr. Kolade was a man of uncommon grace and intellect. He attended Government College, Ibadan, and later graduated from Fourah Bay College, Freetown, Sierra Leone. Over the decades, he distinguished himself as a towering figure across multiple fields — from media and diplomacy to corporate governance and national service.
His professional journey included serving as Director-General of the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC), Chairman of Cadbury Nigeria Plc, and a former Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of Pan-Atlantic University. He was also a respected voice in ethics and leadership, mentoring generations through his words and actions.
Dr. Kolade received several honorary doctorate degrees, including from the University of Sierra Leone (1976) and McPherson University (2016), in recognition of his lifelong dedication to education, integrity, and nation-building.
As one of AREF’s most distinguished Patrons, Ambassador Kolade’s wisdom, humility, and unwavering belief in service to others have left an indelible mark on our Foundation’s mission and values. His counsel and presence enriched the lives of all who worked alongside him.
The Board of Trustees will participate in the funeral events in honour of our beloved Patron.
