The Citizens Action Network is deeply concerned about the conduct of the Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, and its Private Sector Participation, PSP operators in Lagos State.
For months, many communities across Lagos have not seen refuse trucks. Yet residents are still forced to pay monthly waste bills. This is illegal, unethical, and amounts to extortion.
Today, refuse is everywhere in Lagos State. Every house has heaps of waste in its compound. Lagos is fast turning into a dumping ground, and if urgent action is not taken, we risk another outbreak of cholera and malaria in the state. Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government appears to be doing nothing about it.
At the same time, LAWMA’s parking system has abandoned the globally accepted Park and Pay model for forced monthly tickets. Citizens are paying for parking spaces they never use.
Our Demands:
1. No Service, No Pay: If refuse is not packed for a month in any community, that month’s bill must be waived.
2. Return to Park and Pay: Introduce digital, per-hour/per-day payment. Stop compulsory monthly tickets immediately.
3. Publish Service Report: LAWMA must publish a monthly report showing how many times each area was serviced and revenue collected.
We cannot continue to subsidize inefficiency and failure with our pockets. Lagos residents deserve dignity, cleanliness, and fairness.
We call on the Lagos State Government and the Ministry of Environment to act on these demands within 30 days.
