It was a black Sunday on May 11, 2025, as two young dispatch riders tragically lost their lives in a devastating road traffic crash on the Eko-Apongbon Inward Bridge, Lagos.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos Sector Command, the fatal crash occurred at about 12:45hrs and involved two articulated trucks and a motorcycle. The vehicles, identified with registration numbers T-10357 LA and KJA 107 XM, collided and it resulted in a 20-foot container falling off one of the trucks, crushing the two unsuspecting dispatch riders instantly.
A total of five adult males were involved in the crash. Two persons were confirmed dead, while one sustained injuries and received immediate medical attention. The loss is heartbreaking, especially as the victims were simply carrying out their daily duties when the unfortunate incident occurred.
Preliminary investigations revealed the cause of the crash to be loss of control and speed violation, despite the smooth condition of the road.
Emergency responders, including the FRSC, Nigerian Police, and other relevant agencies, swiftly arrived at the scene. Recovery operations were carried out, and both the inward and outward lanes of the Alaka corridor were temporarily shut to allow for the safe lifting of a 40-foot container conveying fish, using a Goliath crane.
The Lagos State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Kehinde G. Hamzat, extends heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. He further urges all road users, especially truck drivers and commercial operators, to strictly adhere to speed limits, ensure proper vehicle maintenance, and avoid fatigue while on long-distance journeys.
