The Nigerian film industry has scored a major international milestone as “My Father’s Shadow”, a powerful drama rooted in the country’s political and cultural history, is set to premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival this May.
Written by Wale Davies and Directed and co-written by Akinola Davies Jr., “My Father’s Shadow” is a collaborative production between Nigerian producer Funmbi Ogunbanwo of Fatherland Productions and UK-based producer Rachel Dargavel of Element Pictures.
The film, shot in Lagos and Ibadan, explores the emotional aftermath of the 1993 presidential election and its impact on a father-son relationship.
British-Nigerian actor Sope Dirisu takes the lead role, alongside New entrants Godwin and Chibuike Egbo.
The film’s selection for a world premiere at Cannes marks a significant achievement for the film industry and places Nigerian storytelling in the global spotlight.
Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has commended the film’s global breakthrough, praising the creative team and reaffirming his administration’s dedication to supporting the arts.
“This is a proud moment for Lagos and for Nigeria,” the Governor stated. “We are committed to nurturing local talent and creating an environment where creativity can thrive.”
The Lagos State Film and Video Censors Board (LSFVCB), in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, also expressed pride in supporting the project.
According to the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, the film represents “A significant step in amplifying Nigerian voices on the world stage.”
As the Cannes Film Festival draws near, anticipation is building across Nigeria’s entertainment industry. Residents of Lagos and film enthusiasts nationwide are encouraged to follow the premiere and celebrate what is expected to be a landmark moment for Nollywood.
