The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, psc, acipm, mnips, has convened a stakeholders’ meeting ahead of the enforcement of the Liquor (Licensing) Law of Delta State, pursuant to the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc (+), NPM, for Commands across the country to enforce applicable laws regulating the sale and consumption of liquor. The meeting was convened to sensitise relevant stakeholders, clarify the purpose of the exercise and promote compliance ahead of enforcement in the State.
The CP explained that the exercise is not intended to frustrate legitimate businesses or impose undue hardship on operators, but to enforce existing law in the interest of public safety. He stated that proper regulation will enable relevant authorities to effectively monitor places where liquor is sold and consumed and ensure that such premises are not used for criminal activities. He added that the exercise is aimed at crime prevention and control, as well as the safety of residents of the State, noting that a decent and properly regulated environment will contribute to a safer and more peaceful society.
The representative of the Delta State Ministry of Justice provided the legal perspective on the Liquor Licensing Law and underscored the need for collaboration among relevant stakeholders in addressing issues surrounding the sale and consumption of alcohol in the State. The Executive Director (Operations), Delta State Internal Revenue Service, Prof. Frank Onyisi Nwugo (PhD), Esq., observed that awareness of the existing legal requirements remains limited and advocated wider sensitization across all Local Government Areas to ensure broader coverage and understanding. The representative of the Secretary to the State Government equally appealed to hoteliers, liquor dealers and other affected operators to familiarise themselves with the law and ensure compliance.
The meeting had in attendance representatives of the Delta State Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Lands, Office of the Secretary to the State Government, Delta State Internal Revenue Service and Local Government Councils across the State, as well as the Chairman, Nigeria Hoteliers Association, Delta State, hoteliers, wine and liquor dealers, among other stakeholders. The Command therefore calls on operators of affected establishments to cooperate with relevant authorities and comply with the provisions of the law, reiterating that the exercise is geared towards lawful regulation, crime prevention and the safety and security of residents of Delta State.
