Primate Ayodele, Ademola Lookman and AFCON 2025: Why Journalists Must Tread With Caution – Adenike Olawunmi

Since the beginning of the African Cup of Nations 2025 in Morocco, Nigerian prophet, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has constantly faced backlashes because of his prophecy regarding the Super Eagles and some players.

Just days before the tournament began, Primate Ayodele released his 2026 prophecies and while answering questions asked by journalists, he made it known that there are some players who will not ‘help’ the Super Eagles, among which was Ademola Lookman.

However, He made it known that the Super Eagles won’t be eliminated quickly and that the team can get to the final stage and battle for the first position.

Since the tournament began, Ademola Lookman has no doubt performed absolutely well, scoring goals and providing assists for his teammates, especially Victor Osimhen, to score goals.

Due to this, many have been calling Primate Ayodele a fake prophet because Lookman turned out to be great against what he earlier said, but in his defence, He urged Nigerians to be patient and wait till the end of the tournament. In fact, many were trying to link his prophecy to the fracas that happened between Osimhen and Lookman, but the prophet kept mute, asking critics and supporters to keep calm.

There is now a trend going on against Primate Ayodel,e which has to do with his name being tagged to anything relating to prophecies on the Super Eagles or AFCON 2025. The other day, Pastor Adeboye ‘mocked’ a certain prophet for his prophecy regarding Super Eagles; the man of God didn’t mention anyone’s name, but people were quick to tag it as Primate Ayodele.

Just Saturday, after the Super Eagles recorded a victory against Algeria, former Force PRO, Muyiwa Adejobi, while celebrating the victory,y made a statement, “Where is that prophecy about Super Eagles against?”, without mentioning anyone’s name, and immediately, people started tagging Primate Ayodele’s name to it.

While some of these critics are social media users, it’s sad to see journalists who are meant to uphold the ethics of their profession, regardless of the pressure, validate these fake things against the man of God.

As a journalist, it is expected that you report exactly what your source is saying; if your source is saying A, you shouldn’t add B to it because that simply means you have added your opinion to what is meant to be a report of someone’s account, which isn’t acceptable.

In the case of Muyiwa Adejobi, Primate Ayodele never prophesied against the Super Eagles; rather, he was supportive of the team when he said the Super Eagles can get to the final of the tournament, so it’s mysterious that a credible platform like Leadership Newspaper would quote the former Force PRO mentioning Primate Ayodele when he never did.

Even in the case of Pastor Adeboye, he never mentioned Primate Ayodele, but some journalists were quick to say he was referring to the prophet, and this is getting worse by the day.

Primate Ayodele is definitely not the only man of God to have prophesied regarding the AFCON tournament. While he may be the most popular and has the most famous prophecies, he wasn’t the only one. If Adeboye or Adejobi comes around tomorrow and says they weren’t talking about Primate Ayodele, what would be the fate of these journalists and their media organisations?

Sincerely, Journalists need to be very careful when writing these things that are not real. If your source didn’t say a thing, adding your own interpretation just shows how mischievous you can be. This needs to stop totally.
