CITAB Welcomes Borno, Plateau’s Education Projects; Urges States Not to Turn Blind Eye to Real Inclusion

The Centre for Infrastructural and Technological Advancement for the Blind (CITAB) applauds the bold moves by Borno and Plateau States to erect new educational facilities and expand their reach, describing these projects as more than just a facelift. They are a chance to lay the groundwork for a more inclusive future.

This recognition was detailed in a statement released in Abuja today and signed by CITAB’s Executive Chairman, Jolomi George Fenemigho.

According to the group, opening the doors to new secondary schools and inaugurating the High Islamic College in Fikiyel is certainly headline grabbing, and TETFund backed growth at Plateau State University definitely sets the mood for academic advancement. Still, CITAB urges those in charge not to get swept away by the surface appeal. It’s time for the authorities to get hands on and address the hidden obstacles buried in so called modern infrastructure.

Fenemigho teased out a key point, You can have the grandest vision in town, but the real test is whether everyone can get in on the action. Ask yourself, are these new schools and fresh renovations something all students can enjoy, or is it just a beautiful scene for those lucky enough to see it

While celebrating this wave of development, CITAB reminded leaders that true inclusion does not come as an afterthought. If the work stops before it gets under the skin of accessibility, then the impact will remain flat.

CITAB urges the following action for the state governments

Admissions with Open Arms
Both Borno and Plateau must welcome visually impaired students into these mega schools and colleges. Do not cordon them off into separate corners. Bring them into the heart of campus life where the real chemistry happens.

Assistive Learning That Goes All the Way
The High Islamic College and PLASU Medical Faculty should be outfitted with top tier assistive equipment. Bring out the Refreshable Braille Displays, AI powered scanners, and accessible digital tools. There’s no pleasure in facilities that only look good in the brochure but leave some students feeling out of place.

Turn on the Lights in Administration
Renovated buildings like the PLASU Senate Building need to be more than skin deep. They should allow blind administrators and students to move freely and confidently, without needing to be led by the hand.

Curricula That Leave No One Behind
Let every course and resource get the inclusive treatment from day one. Students should not have to grope in the dark or feel their way awkwardly through a system that was never built for them.

As these states move to show off their new assets, remember that true progress means letting everyone take their turn in the spotlight, Fenemigho said. A truly open and accessible school is the only way to ensure that every student, sighted or not, can enjoy all the opportunities on offer.

CITAB stands ready to work hand in hand with every stakeholder to ensure that the story of inclusive education in Borno and Plateau is more than just a pretty cover. It is time to raise the standard behind closed doors and let everybody get a fair share of the excitement.
