As the preparation towards the process of selecting the next Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, it is important that we flashback and recall when the departed Awujale, Oba Sikiru Adetona, issued a poignant warning to kingmakers, cautioning them against selecting a successor based on wealth rather than capability.

This advice came as a reminder of the need for visionary leadership in the ancient kingdom. He made the call during the 2019 Ojude-Oba festival.

Oba Adetona, who was installed in 1960 and reigned for over 65 years on the throne, had expressed his concerns during the 2019 Ojude-Oba Festival in Ijebu-Ode. The departed monarch emphasised the importance of choosing a capable successor who can build on the achievements of his reign.

Oba Adetona had taken out time to urge kingmakers to prioritise capability over wealth, ensuring the next leader can sustain the kingdom’s progress.
He warned against politicizing the selection process, emphasizing the need for a fair and transparent approach.

The departed Awujale advised kingmakers to seek God’s direction when selecting his successor, asking for guidance to make an informed decision.

According to him, Awujale’s throne is not for money bags, neither is it for politicians, nor for people that are politically exposed.

He stated that It is antithetical, and a debasement of Ijebu culture and heritage, to select a money bag or a politician without looking at the candidate’s relevance to and impact on Ijebu Kingdom.

The late Awujale’s words should serve as a reminder of the importance of responsible leadership. As the kingdom prepares for a new era, it is essential for kingmakers to heed his advice and choose a leader who will drive progress and prosperity.

Oba Adetona’s leadership was marked by significant achievements, and his counsel reflects his commitment to the well-being of Ijebuland.

The Ojude-Oba Festival is an important cultural event in Ijebuland, celebrating the kingdom’s rich heritage and traditions. The festival has always provided a fitting platform for the Awujale to share his wisdom with the kingmakers, his subjects, visitors and the rest of the world. .

The Awujale’s prayer for the continued growth and prosperity of Ijebuland is a testament to his vision for a brighter future. As the kingdom looks to the future, it is essential to prioritise capable leadership and responsible and responsive governance.

With the end of the era and reign of Oba Adetona, the kingdom will soon embark on a new chapter. The advice he shared will undoubtedly guide kingmakers in their unanimous decision-making process.

The Awujale’s warning to kingmakers should serve as a reminder of the importance of choosing capable and responsible leaders. As Ijebuland prepares for a new era, it is crucial to prioritise responsible governance and visionary leadership.

The future of Ijebuland depends on the decisions made by those charged with the responsibility to select the next Awujale. It is for the good of the kingdom to heed the Kabiyesi’s advice, and for the kingmakers to ensure a bright and prosperous future for the kingdom.
