Persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Egbeda and Ona Ara LGAs have praised Hon. Akin Alabi as their “ICON” for his unquantified support in empowering their community. As part of his continuous commitment to inclusivity, the federal lawmaker and Chairman of the House Committee on Works distributed handicapped tricycles, crutches, and walking sticks, providing vital mobility aids to physically challenged individuals.

Hon. Akin Alabi’s initiative, which included the distribution of crutches, walking sticks, and One hundred pieces of handicapped tricycles, was a significant gesture aimed at enhancing the mobility, independence, and dignity of PWDs. For many beneficiaries, who have long struggled with inadequate support, this act of generosity was life-changing. The event, held in the APC Egbeda party office, drew an emotional response from the recipients, many of whom had been confined to their homes due to the lack of mobility aids.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Alabi highlighted the importance of ensuring that every member of the community, including those with physical disabilities, is not left behind. “True community development is incomplete if it does not include support for marginalized groups, including people with disabilities. We must ensure that no one is left behind,” he said, promising further empowerment initiatives for PWDs by January.

As a federal legislator known for his grassroots engagement, Hon. Akin Alabi has consistently gone beyond his legislative duties to impact the lives of his constituents. His efforts to include persons with disabilities in his development agenda reflect his broader vision of inclusive governance. By working closely with local leaders, he ensures that the most vulnerable receive the help they need, from financial empowerment to mobility aids that allow them to participate more fully in society.

The event was attended by members of the local community, and Oyo Central Senatorial Chairman, Hon Joshua Oyebamiji who on behalf of the acting APC State Chairman, Hon Abas preached unity and oneness and praised Hon Alabi for his continuous achievements in the constituency, praised Akin Alabi for remembering the people with disabilities, other leaders and advocates for disability rights, who expressed their profound gratitude to Hon. Akin Alabi for his continuous efforts to uplift marginalized groups. Many of the beneficiaries, some of whom had been confined to their homes due to lack of mobility support, were visibly emotional as they received their new tricycles and walking aids.

Hon. Ronke Adedeji, APC Woman Leader in Egbeda, pleaded for even more support for PWDs and women in the future. “Our people with disabilities need more empowerment. I humbly plea to our leader to include PWDs and women in all future initiatives, and we will continue to stand by him,” she said.

For the beneficiaries, this initiative was more than just a political gesture. It marked a turning point in their lives, granting them the freedom to engage in work, social activities, and community life. One emotional recipient described Hon. Alabi as a “semi-god,” expressing deep admiration and gratitude for his selfless work. “No politician has ever remembered us except him. His generosity has touched our lives in ways we can never forget,” the recipient said.

Another beneficiary echoed this sentiment, emphasizing how Hon. Alabi’s actions have given them a new sense of freedom and dignity. “In our society, PWDs are often neglected, but Hon. Akin Alabi has shown us that we matter. This is not just a political move, this is a life-changing act.”

Hon. Akin Alabi’s commitment to disability inclusion aligns with global efforts to promote equal rights and opportunities for PWDs. His actions also reflect his dedication to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 10, which focuses on reducing inequality. His role as Chairman of the House Committee on Works allows him to advocate for national infrastructure projects that are accessible to all citizens, furthering his vision of inclusive development.

In addition to the gratitude from the PWD community, NGOs and other individual philanthropists have taken note of Hon. Akin Alabi’s efforts and pledged to support him in his ongoing work. Various organizations have committed to partnering with him in expanding programs that assist persons with disabilities, promising to complement his efforts with additional resources such as healthcare services, vocational training, and educational support.

An NGO representative Miss Sandra Yilgwan remarked, “Hon. Akin Alabi has set a high standard for inclusive leadership. His commitment to keeping his promises is inspiring, and we are ready to support him in furthering this cause.”

The support from individuals and NGOs promises to bolster his efforts, ensuring that his commitment to persons with disabilities remains strong and impactful.

The event concluded with calls for continued support for PWDs, not only from Hon. Alabi but also from other political leaders and government officials. Local leaders pledged to build on Hon. Alabi’s efforts by improving accessibility in public spaces and advocating for the rights of PWDs at the grassroots level.

For the persons with disabilities in Egbeda and Ona Ara, Hon. Akin Alabi is more than just a politician; he is a beacon of hope and a leader who has made their welfare a priority. His latest initiative is a testament to his inclusive approach to governance, setting a high standard for others to follow in promoting the rights and welfare of marginalized groups.
