In a press conference held on Tuesday, the 7th of May , 2024 by the Centre for Human and Socio-economic Rights (CHSR), concerns were raised over the ongoing kingship selection exercise for the stool of Akufon of Idarika in Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State. The chairman of the local government, Mr. Segun Ogunleye, has been called upon to urgently address and intervene in the matter to prevent potential anarchy in the state.
The CHSR, a non-governmental organization dedicated to defending human and socio-economic rights, expressed dismay over the handling of the selection process, particularly highlighting the alleged partisanship of the council chairman. According to CHSR, instead of allowing the kingmakers to follow established protocols, Mr. Ogunleye has purportedly interfered in the process, leading to tensions and disputes within the community.
The crisis stems from the passing of the previous Akufon of Idarika in January 2021, after which the local government communicated with the IGUN ruling house for the nomination of a successor. Despite initial nominations, complications arose with the untimely demise of the nominated candidate, Prince Saheed Abayomi. Subsequent attempts to nominate a new candidate have been met with controversy and allegations of imposition.
Of particular concern is the recent visit by a delegation from the local government to Idarika community, purportedly without proper notification to the ruling house. CHSR alleges that the delegation, accompanied by police officers, disrupted the selection process and attempted to impose a candidate, Mr. Shomade Olugbenga, who is reportedly not a member of the ruling house.
The actions of the local government have raised questions about impartiality and adherence to established chieftaincy laws and procedures. CHSR has issued several demands, including a call for thorough investigations into the allegations of imposition and for the intervention of relevant state authorities to ensure a fair and transparent selection process.
The CHSR has called upon Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun to intervene swiftly to prevent further escalation of tensions and potential unrest in Idarika community. With the stakes high and tensions mounting, the eyes of the state are now on Mr. Ogunleye and the Ikenne Local Government Area to address the concerns raised and restore confidence in the integrity of the kingship selection process.
For now, the situation remains tense as stakeholders await decisive action from the authorities to resolve the crisis and ensure a peaceful transition of leadership in Idarika community.
