In a unified call for safer roads, the youth of Lagos State, under the leadership of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), have thrown their support behind the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in encouraging passengers to speak out against reckless driving.

At the recently concluded 3-Day Ember Months Campaign, themed “Speak Up Against Dangerous Driving: Crashes Kill More Passengers than Drivers,” Director of the Directorate of Transportation, Ahmed Oloyede who represented the State Chairman, Engr. Adigun Ibrahim Olalekan, MNSE, highlighted the role of passengers in preventing road traffic crashes.

Oloyede commended FRSC Lagos Sector Commander, Commander G.K. Hamzat, for organizing the impactful event, emphasizing that road safety is a shared responsibility. Speaking on behalf of Engr. Adigun, he stated:

“Every life on the road is valuable. Dangerous driving behavior jeopardizes not only the driver but also innocent passengers. We must work together to promote safer roads for everyone.”

The campaign addressed the alarming reality that passengers, who often suffer the most casualties in road crashes, can play a crucial role in preventing accidents by speaking up when they observe unsafe driving practices.

Oloyede reaffirmed the commitment of the youth body to working alongside the FRSC, pledging continuous support for initiatives that prioritize road safety in Lagos State.

“Road safety requires collective action. As passengers, citizens have the power to make a difference by holding drivers accountable for reckless behavior. Together, we can create a culture of safety on our roads,” he added.

The FRSC’s Ember Months Campaign aims to reduce the spike in road crashes typically observed during the end-of-year period. Commander Hamzat reiterated the Corps’ dedication to fostering a safer driving culture, urging all stakeholders to collaborate in safeguarding lives.

The youth’s proactive involvement in the campaign signals a promising step toward a safer road culture in Lagos State, with the hope that passengers’ voices will become a powerful tool in curbing reckless driving.
